Live from the ground: Congratulations to hull
Hull have just been applauded off the emirates pitch and deservedly
so. Frankly were not that bad but they defended brilliantly and scored
one cracker and another very decent header. I have seen us play far
worse and come back. Sometimes these things happen. Full report later.

yup your absolutely right…. even though it hurts to lose at home to hull these things happen in sports sometimes, that’s just the way it is. the most important thing right now is to beat porto on tuesday… it tends to happen with arsenal sometimes that when we have a bad loss we kind of go on abit of a bad run so i think its good we have an important match in 3 days so we can try to overcome this loss
27 September 2008 at 8:02 pm
We weren’t terrible but we were lazy & complacent to start with & you can’t just switch your form on & off. It’s like last sason never happened; it was so like the two seasons before when we just turned up & expected the opposition to just let us win. 12 points from 6 games doesn’t sound terrible in isolation but given the teams we’ve played it’s not good. It would take an incredible leap of faith to see us challenging for the title, never mind winning it.
One thing is for certain.Gallas’ place in the team can no longer be justified; never mind keeping the captaincy. 3 goals conceded from corners in 6 games & all of them scored by his man, totally unchallenged. Awful stuff. You simply cannot accept those sort of stats for a centre-half.
Very,very depressing.

I applaud your optimism and your sportsmanship in congratulating Hull. Somehow, the fact we played ok and still lost makes me feel worse at the moment, but I may change my mind once I can get some perspective on the thing. L8ers, ‘playa.

Two defending mistakes yielding two half chance goals. That should only really happen once maybe twice a season at most. However, we really need to solve these set piece problems. I’ve had enough of them. I almost expect them to happen. It can’t be that hard to defend them, when second rate sides seem a lot better at it than us. It’s funny how everyone say we’re too young when our two most senior players are often at fault on these.
Also, RVP has been dismal this season, poor on free kicks and having lot of trouble hitting the target. Don’t think he should be playing. Hope eduardo comes back soon
27 September 2008 at 8:15 pm
Im not one one to jump on the bandwaggon of get wenger out, we’re too young etc but the game was painful to watch. Although we didnt play well at all we managed to go one up and should have had the dogidness and level of concentration to not concede.
Every one is saying we’re not gonna win jack because of our inexperience, but it is our most experienced player that is letting us down. Wenger in the past has spoken about not given 30+ players more than 1 year contracts because they lose the desire to play and gallas has shown in abbundance his lost desire for the game. Other than the goals we have conceded from set pieces, Gallas has time and time been outjumped for the ball. His heart and passion doesnt seem to be in it when competing me for the ball and ultimately it has cost us.
Another rant is the form of Ade. I know he scored a hatful last season and a hattrick the other week his touch and finishing this season leave alot to be desired. He can expect plenty of abuse coming hi way as he showed a lack of respect for the club and the fans in the summer and in my opinion is long way from winning it back.
At the end of the day Hull played well but we should not be worrying if hull play well or not in our own backyard we should comfortably be beating most teams at home!!
27 September 2008 at 8:21 pm
all the bullshit about the .result in midweek counts for nothing same old problems in defending .cesc now posin .new haircut wenger with no signings has f up
27 September 2008 at 8:26 pm
We should have won that game (Hull) but the build up 2 the first goal we conceded had a lot 2 do with Denilson he gives the ball away so so so cheaply as he often does. Than Geovani is allowed space 2 shoot where was the closing down? The second goal we concede is a goal I see all the time I’ve always said this especially 2 the ‘’Arsene Knows Brigade’’ that we need a big commanding no nonsense defender as we as a defense R the most vulnerable team in the top 4 because our defending lacks Leadership, Organization, Understanding and Concentration thus dealing with Long balls, set-pieces, target men and consistent pressure leaves us looking like 3 points that should have been. (note when I talk about the defense I’m not talking about our fullbacks)
But I will never put all the blame on the very young and inexperienced Denilson or the old enough and very experienced Toure & Gallas pair. We lost because we did not kill off our opponents. Adebayor had the best chance and fluffed it V.Persie was his old greedy self he was shooting in difficult angles when it looks easier 2 pass/cross something he does in almost every game. We can’t defend, we were lazy in front of goal and on top of that AW subs as always were fashionably late.
27 September 2008 at 8:26 pm
Simple solution. Gallas out Djourou in. Work on defending corners till it becomes 2nd nature ala the George Graham era. Drop Ade. He’s been shite all season and that includes blackburn away. How he scored a hatrick that day I don’t know. His last 3 games he’s missed complete sitters. Bendtner would have put them away and certainly Vela would have too. That carthorse is costing us big time the opportunities he gets.
27 September 2008 at 8:32 pm
Substitutions should have happened earlier, and I would have liked to see Walcott stay on, and take off Persie or Ade instead - both of whom who were doing nothing. All three goals scored by Hull. I don’t understand the strikers.
27 September 2008 at 8:40 pm
What an awful result! Gallas yet again LOST his marker at a corner. And yet again we tried to score the perfect goal and MISSING TOO MANY chances -bad habits are hard to break………..man oh man, messed up my whole weekend!! And to think that I transferred Geovanni out of my Fantasy football team this morning !!!.Wenger must go!! Just kidding but he needs to take a HARD look at this result and understand that we keep making the same mistakes OVER & OVER again! It was just a matter of time b4 it bit us in the …………well u know where! Drink away your sorrows GOONERS, we have another one on Tuesday………..and BTW, well played HULL!
27 September 2008 at 8:48 pm
Adebayor was bad but Walcott was worse when it came to taking chances. He missed an absolute sitter and another chance in the first half, two goals that could have killed the game. Good run for our first in the second half but that was it. Gallas’s mistake cost us the game. He cannot let a goal in like that and always score on the other end. In my opinion Wenger should start with Djourou who can attack the high balls. Whether he drops Gallas or Toure is upto him, but I want to see a big tall centre back who can eliminate the aerial threat. Our defence at the moment is the weak link.
27 September 2008 at 9:03 pm
I thought we were poor all over. We had no imagination or creativity and played like Hull were going to be a walk over. Ade and rvp did nothing and subs should have been made at half time. The 1st team let the kids down tonight imo.
27 September 2008 at 9:06 pm
Yes, well done to Hull City who were just as hard working and more clinical s deserved to win the game.
This makes depressing reading though: “Phil Brown revealed to Setanta Sports that he had purposefully targeted Arsenal’s weakness at set-pieces ahead of Hull’s stunning 2-1 victory at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.”
Gallas/Toure will never win trophies. They are individually our best centre halves, but they cannot defend as a unit.
27 September 2008 at 9:07 pm
Post match Interview Wenger says corners are killing us….Is this guy taking the piss or summin I could of sworn every1 was saying that 4 years ago 4 fuck sake.
27 September 2008 at 9:32 pm
Can we now please stop talking about the PL title.
27 September 2008 at 11:18 pm
remember….it’s just a game….not a life………….i’m waiting for the second leg
27 September 2008 at 11:48 pm
If we are 2 truly recover AW needs 2 drop Eboue, Adebayor, Gallas and V.Persie and go with a 4-3-3 with JD partnering KT, Song in the HMR Denilson and Fabregas as the CM pair pushing forward while putting more pressure on Denilson 2 track back, Bendtner in the central role of the front 3 Vela on the left, Walcott on the right while given freedom 2 interchange positions with each other. Fabregas as Captain (the last thing we need is clumsy Kolo feeling comfortable) and I’m sure will be fine however if Wenger chooses 2 stick with these underperformers then the only thing we will win is plaudits 4 beautiful football and AW excuses 4 winning jack shit.
28 September 2008 at 2:52 am
no motivation to win, no team work, a bunch of 11 players runnin around wearing arsenal shirt. yea, we fans know gallas is a shithole comin from the scumbags, adebayor bein a bitch he is has no desire to score, he misses more than he passes in a match, im not gonna blame eboue, as once rosicky comes in he will be a squad player. cesc has gone quiet, RVP cant shoot for shit.
no point blamin denilson for his experience hes shown he can play the DM role although he needs a lil more patience that will come with experience, we must try JD in defense as it cant get any worse in defense.
we miss creativity from a player like HLEB (im glad he left us though) and someone who can influence a bit, flamini.
will we ever have a team of 2003/04 season? link Paddy - Bobby - DB - TH14 - Freddy
28 September 2008 at 3:19 am
What 2nd leg, tjmarks?
And yes, if Phil Brown says our defending @ set-pieces is our achilles heel now then we have become Spud-like! They were truly horrid at that and we have become like them!
Everything has been said already and I feel the same about us not having a Tony Adams or Martin Keown (or both), defensive rock to bundle up all those “thugs”. Whenever Cesc plays badly, we get a poor result too. Denilson really isn’t up to the mark yet and I feel he is a player inbetween Cesc and Flamini, not too good either offensively or defensively.
The lost was a disgrace and seeing how the players jogged the ball out from their halves after being 2-1 down is just depressing. The whole team has to take the fall, from defending to attacking, we were just too overconfidant. Porto needs to be annihilated!
28 September 2008 at 6:42 am
i don’t give a shite about whether hull played good or not. we were at the Emirates, we should be beating teams comfortably at home. I mean look at chelski’s home record, they haven’t loss since the stone age. if we’re seriously going to challenge for the EPL, our home record should be nothing but an absolute stunner for a start. because we all know how hard it is to get points away from home on grounds such as chelski’s, man u’s, liverpool’s, on top of dodgy grounds like stoke’s, boro’s etc.
we cannot simply lose at home and say, ‘oh the opposing team performed better than us so it’s okay to lose once in a while like this’. that’s just for shite teams who’s content on having a top 10 finish.
last season we only lost 3 times but still miss out on the title. this season we lost 2 times in the first 6 games. i am not convinced that we’re not gonna lose more than 1 game considering we haven’t even played any of the other big four.
28 September 2008 at 8:00 am
Forget about any AW’s comment that we will win the title this season. Everybody can challlenge title. Even Hull can challenge the title. We were just too relaxed and expected to win the game easily. No determination.
After 1 up, then try to relax and give Hull the opportunity to come fm behind. No special criticism to Alumina. In 1st half, Giovanni already had a great shot fm long distance but disqualified. His 2nd half goal was just another great shot fm him. Alumina looks never a great keeper and will not. Myhill looked much better than him in this game when he had saved so many shots fm us. A great keeper might save us a point but a good keeper would lose all 3 pts. Everybody should not look down Hull anymore.
Our hype fm Milk cup just made us too complacent and distracted. Forget whatever the kids will do in Milk cup. Only Champion league and the league competition count and matter.
28 September 2008 at 8:40 am
One thing that needs pointing out is that though we lost only 3 games last season we drew a lot of games (don’t know the exact stats). Remember that the difference between a loss and a draw is just a point. ManU has just one loss but even if they do win their in-hand game they’ll be a point below us. Why? They have two draws.
So we can afford more losses, if we get the wins. That’s a big IF but people talking about just three losses last season is a bit misleading.
28 September 2008 at 9:04 am
BGun, it’s not just the losses,it’s who they were against. We’ve had by far the easiest start of any of the big teams.I would be surprised if more than one of them finished in top half of table. (I thnk Blackburn will) We may be a point ahead of Utd but they’ve gone away to Chelsea,Liverpool.
Given the run of games we had we needed to get far more than 12 points to have a serious chance of challenging for title.
28 September 2008 at 1:23 pm
Disagree DPK. Would rather lose v Hull than against Man U or Chelski!
28 September 2008 at 1:26 pm
Big Johan, if you saw anything yesterday to suggest we could get results against MU or Chelski fair play to you cos I certainly couldn’t !
29 September 2008 at 8:30 am
There is/was a Goodplaya headline on the Rocky filter, something like “Your email has won”. Sounded fishy, but I finally decided it was meant to be a joke head. It opens a page with the Goodplaya header, and a ‘404′ graphic underneath. Is this something from Goodplaya, or a virus?
29 September 2008 at 12:36 pm
Im not going to talk about the Hull game as I think everyone has had enough of it.
We will never win the premiership/ champs league with this inexperienced squad. We needed experience to and we still do. Denilson is a quality player but he isnt the partner we need for Fabregas in midfield. Someone in the Flamini mold. Hard working, tactically aware and a solid tackler.
Gallas/Toure will never be an ideal partnership. Why didnt we go for Vincent Kompany? He was cheap and went to City before they walked into their billions. Djourou is a player we do have and should be used now. Taking the captaincy from Gallas would probably send Gallas mental and might might help his play. Something has to be done - fast. Gallas gives all the speech before the game and then makes mistakes at dead ball situations - must infuriate the rest of the boys.
Up front is continually frustrating me. Adebayor looks not to be interested, while Van Persie seems to think he plays foR RVP FC. He can do wonderful things witha football but can annoy the hell out of folks as well.
Bendtner, although he gets a lot of stick, has improved and Vela looks like he can make an impact in the premier league. I would drop Adebayor for the trip to Sunderland this weekend. Players have to know that their place in under threat. (Even more so after the 6-0 thrashing by the second dtring in midweek) Victims of this are Adebayor it seems as well as Gallas.
We are a point ahead of Man Utd, but they ahve played Liverpool and Chelsea away - Two grounds where its hard to points from. Lets not forget our last 6 games include Liverpool away, Chelsea at Home and a trip to Old Trafford. I just hope that we are still in the mix come then, because going into that is gonna be hard enough without the added pressure of having to go there and certainly win to stay to stay in the hunt for the title.
Im tired of hearing “tThe squad will be good enough in 2, 3 years, just wait and see” - we have saying that since 2005, and we are still saying it.
Arsene, its not your job to ensure the next 5-10 years are blessed with awseome talent, so much that another transfer doesnt take place for that amount time. Its about the present. Besides, alot of those youngsters in that 6-0 win weill be sold, as they will want to play first team football.
Overall its not a disaster, we could support Spurs or Newcastle - But we dont, we support Arsenal. A massive club with title ambitions and im afraid whats in the squad at the moment is not good enough to challenge.
29 September 2008 at 3:43 pm
Almunia’s distribution was good, I even remember one point where he tried to get the ball out quickly, but the outfield players were so sluggush getting out he paused a few times, shrugged and just hoofed it to the Hull defense. Not his fault, just a good example of how (I feel) the players were in autopilot.
29 September 2008 at 7:38 pm
Spartak Moscow in 1982(?) That’s the last time I remember an away team being clapped off the pitch by Arsenal fans. I think we drew out there and then got demolished 2-5 (on the night? someone will look it up)
North Bank were cheering their goals in the end. I remember it was a brilliant display of pass and move by Moscow that at first shocked the crowd and then enchanted them. We looked like a pub team compared - though to be fair we looked like a pub team a fair bit in those days
