Youngsters undone by classy Burnley - report and player ratings
Burnley 2 Arsenal 0
SUCCUMBING to a disciplined, tight and enterprising Burnley side who play together every week was no great disgrace last night.
The first hour or so was an excellent football match in which they took their chance and we either spurned (Bendtner the first time, Randall) ours or saw them saved (Bendtner a couple of other times, Vela) by an in form keeper.
After the second shambolic Burnley goal the home side made it very, very tough to claw our way back into the game. Burnley should take a lot of credit for an excellent performance.
It’s cliched, but the youngsters wil learn from nights like these.
They will learn that the massive defeats that Sheffield United and Wigan went down to were heavily reliant on the first goal going our way. When it doesn’t, defeat can arrive very quickly.
I thought the attitude of the side was fairly good. This was a performance largely shorn of ego or moaning and only really Vela was muscled out of it completely.
So what of the players? Fabianski (6) has improving to do. But at 23, he has plenty of time to do it. Gavin Hoyte (6) is such a clone of his brother it’s scary. Slightly less jittery perhaps, but we’re talking seriously small margins here.
Silvestre (6) was Silvestre. Rodgers (6) looked shaky but always showed for the ball from Fabianski and distributed it decently. Whoever plays against Gibbs (6.5) they always tend to give him trouble.
But Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy both took time to learn how to defend and most crucially Gibbs already has many attributes that you just can’t teach.
Randall (5.5) had a nightmare for the second goal after initially covering well. His one-on-one effort was also at a decent height for the keeper.
Ramsey (6.5) had his moments but was quiet after the break, while Wilshere (6.5) also faded after a good first half.
Merida (6.5) had one great run and shot and showed a little more overall than I had seen in the previous two games. Vela (5.5) struggled to do very much at all.
Bendtner (5.5) was on occasion too casual with his finishing and on occasion plain unlucky. More generally, he was on occasion infuriatingly imprecise but also put in Randall with a superb flick.
I’d love to see some stats about his running. He certainly looks lazy, but these things can easily be deceptive.
Simpson (6) gave it his all and created some movement, while Lansbury was OK but nothing remarkable. Bischoff (5.5) saw little of the ball after coming on.
I genuinely think that all of them have a chance of making it and none of them are guaranteed to make it. Sure, Wilshere, Ramsey, Vela and probably Gibbs have stood out in this season’s run and look the closest to regular first team action.
But I wouldn’t bet my house against any of them making it frankly.
Of course, they won’t all do it. But I really don’t think things are set in stone.
This was our first defeat to a lower league side under Arsene Wenger, which utterly demolishes the idea he has not respected cup competitions.
I for one fully back playing the youngsters. You only need to remember how the likes of Clichy, Cesc, RVP and Walcott began their careers on this stage to know how valuable the experience is.
Without it, some of the young players would spend a lot of time warming the bench.

I cant belive the amount of crap bedner has gotten from this game he was better than vela yet still gets more blame vela was non-exixtant. It seems like Arsenal fans have to hate someone; before it was senderos and now its bendtner. I struggle to see how some fans lambasted senderos for being error prone yet not say anything about clichys fuckups which are more constant than senderos’s. gibbs was great this game i seriously thought clichy was playing for a second, wilshere had a stinker lost the ball all the time was second worst arsenal player, but he is young and has amazing potentiol
3 December 2008 at 1:24 pm
Well played burnley is all there is to say. We played well enough but just like you say , that first goal makes all the difference. I hope that the young players dont feel down about this result as they have performed very well in the comp this season. As we all know at that age inconsistency is as natural as teenage spots, we dont like them but if you want clear skin in the future the one thing you shouldnt do is squeeze the life out of them. Like most things in life i believe that time will take care of any probs. focus on the wig wams now.
3 December 2008 at 1:24 pm
3 times Bendtdner was 1 on 1 with keeper….he never looked like converting any of these chances. He struggles to control the ball, looks clumsy & will never be good enough to play for Arsenal on a regular basis. This is not a question of victimisation simply reality.
3 December 2008 at 1:26 pm
i agree tunadog, but the 5-8 million we get for him wont do any harm and i think it will be soon.
3 December 2008 at 1:37 pm
As nr790 said, I’m a little surprised about the stick Bendtner has received for this game. Sure, he was guilty of missing a couple of chances but I thought he put in the effort, he had some really nice touches / interplay. Gibbs too was okay I thought.
Burnley basically denied us time on the ball, we didn’t use the flanks too much and at times looked like our senior team did, trying to thread the ball through the middle. But, despite all that, if we’d taken our chances, we’d have won the game. So, it’s disappointing but part of the learning process for the CC kids.
Like you say though Goodplaya, it’s hard to figure out who’ll make it. I’d like to see Randall bulk up a bit and play with a bit more belief. As Keown stated in his BBC profile of the young guns, he seems to lack the belief. Watching him play yesterday, despite his mistakes, I somehow get the feeling that he could be a terrific player.
I felt sad this morning when I realized that I wouldn’t be seeing this team play again for this season. They were fun to watch. Next season then.
3 December 2008 at 1:58 pm
nr790, I agree.
Sometime sI think people are harsher with Bendtner because he doesn’t look like a kid, we forget that he is a kid and still learning! Yes he missed easy chances, and that effected his confidence, but he ran and made chances and he does care about the club despite looking lazy. Even after the final whistle he argued with Burnley players showing his frustration, now don’t tell me that is the reaction of a lazy player who isn’t interested.
3 December 2008 at 2:11 pm
Disappointed for the kids is my over-riding emotion from last night..In reality we should have won with the chances created..Anything Burnley done in the game came from Arsenal mistakes, not taking away from their win, but the inexperience showed with too many Arsenal players chasing the ball when we went forward..The players on the ball most often took the wrong options mainly by running into opponents and losing the ball. From early I thought our best chances came when we opened the play and looked for the longer quicker ball.
This led to six one on one chances, which obviously weren’t taken. I actually Bendtnar worked well as a target man, but his finishing was woefull. I wonder do senior players feel insulted by being selected for Carling Cup action. On that subject the injury crises at the club actually robbed the team of Song and Djourou and they woukd have made a difference, especially if Song was a holding midfielder.
Burnley to their credit didn’t ever resort to physical or intimidating tatics, despite the promise from the Sky commentator that they would “get in Arsenal’s face”. They would be more of a addition to the Premier League than many of the deadwood that have got promotion in recent years.
There is a lot to take from the run this season, and probably a lot to be learned by Wenger and co. I have always liked Bendtnar but I wonder if he has a future at Arsenal. He is at best third choice striker and will be fourth choice when Eduardo returns. With the emergence of Simpson as a natural goal scorer where does that leave Nick? What would Simpson have done with those Bendtnar chances in the first half?
3 December 2008 at 2:12 pm
The performance was really similar to the FA Cup game, then Burnley hit the bar at nil nil, the difference being that Eduardo is a much more natural finisher. If he had been fit he could have been the difference here.
3 December 2008 at 2:16 pm
‘Anything Burnley done in the game came from Arsenal mistakes’ now lets not get carried away here. Burnley had 9 shots on target to Arsenal’s 8. Are you saying that all 9 were gifted to them?
3 December 2008 at 2:22 pm
“I for one fully back playing the youngsters. You only need to remember how the likes of Clichy, Cesc, RVP and Walcott began their careers on this stage to know how valuable the experience is.
Without it, some of the young players would spend a lot of time warming the bench.”
I do agree but… wouldn’t it be better to have half a team of winners than a full team of losers. Take for example the CC final a few years ago, OK it was a fully strength Chelsea side and we did do very well, but at the end of the match we were losers, I actually don’t think it did us mentally any good at all in the long run.
The argument goes along the lines of “we will learn the lessons of defeat” but I actually think it has the opposite effect, when your backs are against the wall in a vital match all you have to draw on is the knowledge that last time you were not good enough, why will it be different this time.
3 December 2008 at 2:22 pm
Bendtner tries very very hard right now.
So I guess the fans will boo him.
3 December 2008 at 2:37 pm
First defeat to a lower league side under Arsene Wenger? No way. That’s incredible but at the same time disappointing. Since our move to the Emirates, there have been so many firsts (X in XX years) of the bad kind its depressing.
3 December 2008 at 2:41 pm
If you ask me this defat was Wengers fault as if yo uare taking two players who have been playing in the first team, namely Bendtner and Silvestre and playing them with the ‘kids’ they are not going to be in the correct frame of mind. They were way too casual and almost took their performance for granted. If Wenger had stuck with the team that beat Wigan i think we would be celebrating victory now.
3 December 2008 at 2:50 pm
A problem yesterday was, that Wenger again was playing with four central(ish) midfielders in the team. When the full backs don’t come forward enough this creates a problem for Arsenals attacking play. Movement is the key to winning football matches, and yesterday our movement wasn’t good in the final third.
Goodplaya, has the site been down?
3 December 2008 at 3:41 pm
The stick that Bendtner has got in some quarters his absolutely ridiculous. People accuse him of being or looking ‘lazy’. Yet he chased every lost cause and went to the keeper in a way that gained Ade so many admirers a couple of years ago.
No professional footballer makes it into the first team at Arsenal by being ‘lazy’. None. It doesn’t happen. I question some people’s definition of the word lazy if they think that’s the case.
Bendtner needs to be kept for at least a few more years. His talent is undeniable and has been there to see for some time, whether it was against Birmingham on loan or his sumptuous backheel last night. His international goalscoring record speaks for itself, and the fact that he had 3 or however many chances he had at all last night at all shows that he’s not a dud.
The fact that he’s ostensibly been called in to fill in the figurative hole in the squad left by Eduardo has made his task difficult and I’m sure he has tried his best.
Like I said, a lot of the stick is just ridiculous.
3 December 2008 at 4:48 pm
Holdo, I would say that Burnley’s attacks came from Arsenal mistakes, that is not a criticism of them just how I saw the game.. Arsenal lost the ball too often with too many men ahead of the ball for my liking. Again that may be a comment on their youthfullness rather than their ability.
4 December 2008 at 11:44 am
Nicklas just struck me as a little bereft of confidence. With his one on ones he needed to take an early fininsh but he was pressing too hard for a goal and as such took a touch too many or dallied too long. It’s not fatal, he will improve of this I have no doubt and he will be a fine player. Give him time and get off his back.
The margins in this game weren’t great. An eualiser before half time (which we had many opportunities to get) would’ve made for a completely different second half. As it was credit to Burnley, they played some really good stuff and didn’t put 8 or 9 men behind the ball until they led by 2 with 20 minutes to go. I was impressed they tried to play football against our kids and their win was well deserved. May they go on and knock out that third London team still left in this competition, that would be fantastic.
4 December 2008 at 4:34 pm
bendtner’s getting more stick than vela for the simple reason that bendtner’s had a lot more chances to prove himself in the first team than vela imo.
4 December 2008 at 5:42 pm

You sound gay for bendtner.

I’m having problems to grasp a concept why single mothers are trying to get a man by any chance, just to get them to lay down. Here’s comes the moment where a man could get a chick for one night fun, by not having to lie her not a bit. Have you ever heard of a milf hunter? I guess you didn’t. A milf hunter is a a stand up guy that is looking for beautiful solo milfs. I was wondering why single mothers are looking for a man that help them all the time. Let me hear your opinion.

This is acquiring a bit more subjective, but I very much choose the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has much more flair, and some cool functions like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see associated albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one particular of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will occur into view, allowing you to navigate close to exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” can also be good enjoyable, letting you come across other people with shared tastes and becoming buddies with them. You then can listen to some playlist produced depending on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Individuals concerned with privacy will be relieved to understand you are able to prevent the public from seeing your individual listening habits in case you so choose.
