Football’s priorities, Spurs preview and looking further ahead
GREAT to see football getting it’s priorities right as ever of late.
There has been outrage over an ITV techie forgetting to flick a switch to move the ads when Everton v Liverpool went to extra-time. Never ones to miss a passing bandwagon and realising that on this occasion they were not to blame, the FA have decided to conduct affairs in public and have demanded a full explanation for what happened.
Here it the explanation: someone forgot to flick a switch.
It was shambolic but it was also a one off accident and it did nothing to undermine the integrity of football itself.
Then we’ve had simmering accusations that allowing a little time leeway on a transfer where all three parties (club, club and player) were in agreement, is somehow creating a sham.
I can’t help think incidents such as penalties given for handballs outside the box when the technology clearly exists to get such decisions correct are far more damaging to the sport’s credibility. Not looking at anyone in particular Villa.
Or even better than that, the farce at Anfield last Sunday. Lampard rightly called for refs to consult their assistants on tackles such as his. Even better would be to say that if the ref ever wants to issue a straight red, the fourth official must OK it after viewing a video replay first. They are such game changing decisions that they merit having a little time taken over - not that sending Lampard straight off prevented a disruptive melee anyway.
As it is, Lampard has had the card rescinded - but the fact Chelsea were wrongly a man down for so long stands.
The Bosingwa situation is beyond parody. The linesman who missed his lunge has been removed from the Premier League list. It was a terrible howler, though job demotion on one error seems a little harsh.
Either way, in demoting him, they have admitted Bosingwa was guilty of the offence. And yet apparently because the linesman spotted it but wrongly did nothing, no further action can be taken. Talk about wronging a wrong.
Anyway, enough of that rant. It’s Spurs this weekend and while for many people derby days represent the highlight of the season, for us it’s becoming a horrible countdown until the day that unbeaten league record finally goes.
I make it nine and a bit years since we lost to them in the league and just that solitary defeat in 25 league encounters under Arsene. Against any opposition that would be a great record.
Against our deadliest local rivals it’s a tremendous tribute to the way he has motivated his sides and ensured the importance that the fans attach to this game has been appreciated by players who have not grown up in North London.
Whatever happens, I think the game marks the closing of a phase of our season. When it resumes after the international break we should have Arshavin and Eduardo involved. We will face a run of seven league games (Sunderland, Fulham, Blackburn, City at home and WBA, Newcastle and Wigan away) where 21 points from 21 has to be the realistic aim.
The Champions League will be just around the corner and we will also know who we will have to beat to ensure our first visit to Wembley - for the FA Cup semi-final, with the draw for the quarter finals taking place before the Cardiff replay.
How on earth Spurs scraped a point in the fixture at the Emirates is beyond me. It came courtesy of a moment from Bentley that was better than everything else he’s done this season combined, Manuel Almunia’s biggest cock-up in two years, an inexplicable Clichy slip, a scorcher on his wrong foot from Jenas and a long ranger that was either going to fly wide or be comfortably saved until it spun up off a defender, smacked the post and fell perfectly for Lennon.
Yes, we were poor. But I still can’t fathom how it happened.
Let’s hope for better this weekend.

You say we were poor but the funny thing is, for about 70 minutes we were in total control. Once Bentley’s fluke goal went in, it was all Arsenal and 4-2 going into stoppage time flattered them.
Yet as you say, how they got anything out of it is beyond comprehension.

That’s the story for large chunks of this season, we have conceded constantly and at times when it just seemed impossible. While not wishing to bring up Flamini for the umpteenth time we have certainly missed his shouting during key moments.

Again agree up until that point we were very good or very bad. Porto 4:0 Hull2:1 is a prime example of the range of performance we seam to put in. In that game we were very good for 80%.

If you watch it Almunia could have done better with it, he was caught ball watching.
As you mentioned the fixtures have been kind to us (I wish). The next few games are good, however, we play the top 3 in our last 6 games. That’s a bit harsh. Its good for TV viewing but not for us.
As it happens with the injuries its worked in our favour as we should be almost full strength by the time these games come, so f*** you FA, its OK by us.

i really hope song does well in dm in the final half of the season. i’ve been calling out for a new dm, but i don’t like complaining at wenger. instead i just wish he’s got it right not to, but only time will tell.

Flamini was brilliant last year but he was the guy who gave the short pass to Clichy at Bham Although Clichy was looking the wriong way Flamini could have hoofed it and the title would have been won (imo by quite a long way) and he gave the ball away at Anfield to Gerrard for their first.
I’m not quite sure what I’m saying - everyone makes mistakes but I don’t think he was missed that much against Spurs - what’s really missing (imo) is goal-scoring from Ade and Fabregas and Theo needs to be signed up sharpish too.

I get stressed before every Spurs game these days and I have a particularly bad feeling about this one. I have a very annoying Spurs-supporting brother-in-law - can anyone offer any advice about what I should say to him if the Spuds win? Am currently thinking “Enjoy it while you can, ‘cos it will be at least another nine years before you beat us again.” Or: “At last you have something to show for that amazing amount of money you’ve spent.” Anyone got anything better? (Apart from F*** off, obviously. That would be bad for family relations.)

ryan - Please understand that we DO NOT need a defensive midfielder. That would take us back several years and recreate the problems we succeeded in removing last year. The big step forward we made last year was to bench our DM (Gilberto) and replace him with a midfield dynamo (Flamini). Flamini spent qaqs much time in front of Fabregas as he did behind him and certainly wasn’t a DM; he was simply a good midfield player who could tackle too. Replacing Gilberto by Flamini made the whole midfield more mobile and enabled us to attack at a much higher tempo and with more variety. Denilson is making good progress in that direction but does have a little way to go. So, please don’t keep going on about us buying a DM, which would do so much damage.

What’s odd is that in pre-season Wenger said that he saw Song as a CB as he didn’t have the stamina for midfield…or did I imagine that? I agree that Flamini’s dynamism was preferable to Gilberto’s calmness - and was a better foil for Cesc. We should re-sign Flam this summer, even if we do nothing else, but it will be pricey.

Great point about this game being the end of a chapter in this season. What better way to close it out and extend the unbeaten run that to beat Sp*rs at WHL.

Brilliant post Goodplaya on the unfathomable shambles that is the FA disciplinary system being somehow less of a sham than some lethargic news reporting on a transfer deal.
And I agree with you on the TV adverts accidentally coming on during the Everton goal. Get over it, England. It’s not as if you were denied seeing a replay of the goal. In any case, the ITV would be excused for assuming those two sides would never score on the basis of the dross that preceded it.

brdgunner, I actually think you’re being very kind to Almunia. For me, there is absolutely no doubt that he should have saved Bentley’s shot. If you watch the height it actually crossed the goal-line it’s pretty depressing; nowhere near the crossbar. Almunia simply got his footwork horribly wrong.
Blakey’s right. It was definitely Kolo that Wenger said didn’t have the stamina to play in midfield.
Totally agree re: the Spurs game. We have to lose to them eventually & like the sad cnuts they are we’ll hear about if for the next 5 seasons even if we then beat them 10 times in a row. Fingers crossed it lasts a bit longer anyway.

As a fan for over 30 yrs its a funny situation - as a gooner I’ve been used to the good times and now I remember the normal times. Being a gooner is not like supporting l’pool or man uted. You accept that, generraly being a gooner is being on a hiding to nothing. Sadly we’re back to how we used to be - Arsenal as a generally mediocre team. Ultimately it doesn’t matter cos the arse have never been a big team, just a team that that had a lot of history but very few trophies. We’ve been spoilt over the past 10 yrs but its coming to an end. Now is the time for 5-10 yrs of general mida table stuff . but that is were we’ve been so long. We’ve been spoilt but now its pretty much at an end. I’ll stil support the arse, just gotta remember that being an arse fan is no longer a top team

proj48, Like you I’ve been a fan for over 30 years (nearer 40) and remember the mid table years and the 1-0 years, but I think we’re on the edge of some really good times. A midfield of Fab, Theo, Rosicknote, Arse-shaving and Nasri will give Adebarndoor enough oppertunities to score a shedload. Eduardo could get into tripple figures with a midfield like that setting him up. Bang Persie is showing real talent. We’ve 2 of the best full backs in the country and some of the best young defenders around in our reserves. My only issues are that although Almunia may be good enough for most EPL teams he’s not good enough for the best teams in the EPL. Also I don’t think toure will ever recover from his illness (malaria doesn’t go away - ever), gallas now has ‘issues’ and silvestre is past it with a dodgy knee. Djourou is only 21 and shows great potential however who will he be alongside in 2 years time???
If we do have a year or 2 mid-table (but I don”t think we’ll drop out the top 4), I don’t mind provided we’re above the spuds (please god, let them be in the championship next year).
In the next few years Vela, Ramsey, Wilshire and many more will be ‘kicking on’, then we’ll have the best squad in the EPL as well.

Iv’e been a fan for over 30 years now.
The first game that I attended was a league cup replay against Brighton and Hove Albion.
Which we won comfortably 4-0. All headed goals. 2 from Stapleton and 2 from Vasson (RIP).
Brady was magnificant that night.
I was a North Bank regular during the later years of the Howe reign and for all of the Graham years. Since the demolition of the old North Bank. I roughly attend about have a dozen games a season and the odd away game.
All I can say to the current crop of gooners who constantly slag off Wenger and the team is FUCK OFF and support Man u if you want glory.
Yes the team is playing poorly. But we are managing to grind out results. Whilst waiting for our injured players to comeback. I’d take a point today. Aston Villa still have to play Chelsea, Man u and Liverpool. As Goodplaya pointed our next run of games are all winnerbal.
I know this won’t happen but if AW played Gibbs in front of Clichy on the left side. Played JD in central midfield alongside Nasari and gave Arsharvin a start on the right. Then we would have a better shape to the team, look more solid, capable of scoring and could probably get away with playing Gallas and Kolo together.
We are not playing well at the moment. But we have potential and quality players to return.
For me Arsenal were the best team in Europe in the latter part of the 90’s and the early part of this decade.
We should have done back to back doubles in 98/99 and 02/03.
Won the Uffa cup.
The champions league at least once and the league cup at least once.
But bad luck and complacentcy denied us even more glory. But I’m still happy with my memories.
Freddies winner against Chelsea, Dennis’s goal against Newcastle, TH’s goal against spurs.
So my message is. Cherish the good moments. Cause you don’t know when they will happen again and get behind the team even when things look like their about to go tits up.

Listened to the game on the radio. It sounded as if Eboue was having an impact until his two silly bookings. I get the impression that he really wants to do well but keeps making poor decisions. I almost feel sorry for him.
However the overriding impression from the commentary (including Steve Claridge as summariser) was that once Eboue was off, Spuzz lacked the football intelligence to take advantage of having the extra man, while we had the intelligence to ensure that it didn’t matter.

I never thought we would lose in that second half. Song was very good shielding the defence and Gallas stepped up to ensure we were rarely threatened.
On another day we would have snatched a 1-0 win. Bendtner’s shot was a great attempt and Song nearly scored.
If Eboue hadn’t been sent off we would have won in my opinion, but at least the unbeaten run keeps going.

80’s Gooner I as a 70’s Gooner don’t quite follow your spin, we should of done this the other 10yrs back but now we’re miles away from that we’re supposed to not mind and support Man Ure? Well excuse me if I object to having to pay over £40 to watch a team moving slowly but steadilly backwards unable to compete with the likes of fuckin Aston wanking Villa. No doubt we’ll have to listen and read the Arsene knows brigade saying how well we played, we did considering we had the worst midfield central pairing of Song(my 1st touch is coming on) and Denilson(I’ve got the build of a 12yr old what do you expect?) hardly Vieira/Petit was it?

I just some highlights of the match and well to me we put in yet another crappy performance. I really think Eboue should be sold in the summer. He s really becoming a nuisance. I cant understand why Wenger put on Bendtner instead of Eduardo and didn’t put on Arshavin. Any way with the next games we have that are all winnable and with Aston VIlla playing Chelsea next week I think we should actually be able to overtake both Chelsea and Villa.
