Arsenal’s fantasy Eboue PR rehabilitation explodes. Spurs report + ratings
IN the eyes of Arsenal’s PR machine I imagine this was the weekend Emmanuel Eboue was supposed to be rehabilitated.
There was a visit to a local school, a “we want to beat Spurs for the fans” call to arms that took top billing on the official web site, a declaration of fitness and a fawning Guardian interview to accompany the educational visit.
All very nice and underlying all of it was the spin that what happened against Wigan was because the fans were basically too stupid to realise he was out of position and had been rushed back too quickly with no back story to what happened.
Since that Wigan incident (where I was not a booer), we have had the above line pumped at us at every opportunity.
Even the thinnest adherence to the alternative view – that Eboue had been a shirking, diving, ill disciplined, semi-unhinged embarrassment for two years – was never acknowledged by club, player or national press.
So we were subjected to a rehabilitation that completely glossed over the real reasons why what happened happened.
Which made the events at White Hart Lane almost inevitable.
Incredibly, that same absurd PR continues to insult our intelligence after the game, with an apology tied in with the absurd suggestion he didn’t deserve to be sent-off.
You worry that so many people have told him none of it’s his fault that he actually believes it.
I’m not going to sit here and tear into the player. Frankly it’s gone way beyond that. No doubt he has certain personal issues that may affect him and those should be respected.
But what can now not be doubted, even by his biggest defenders, is his complete unsuitability to play for Arsenal.
He badly, badly let down everyone yesterday.
Don’t get me wrong, he’d started brilliantly. By far and away our best player early on, popping up everywhere, driving forward, getting dangerous low balls in and even on the spot to knock one in after the whistle had gone.
Then he capitulated. The Sagna challenge that led to the foul may have been a foul and may not have been.
Who knows. Who cares.
To end up (correctly) booked over an incident so minor beggared belief.
The dissent that continued was probably intended to demonstrate the commitment he has been accused of lacking. How tragically misplaced it was.
When the red came it was as if Modric were taking candy from a baby. A simple, deliberate trip by the Spurs man, followed by the inevitable reaction and the second yellow. Even Eboue’s attempt to play the gentleman and escape a second booking was woefully over-acted.
It cost us badly – our chances of winning the game must have lengthened considerably in that moment.
Frankly, team-mates and manager must shoulder some of the blame. Team-mates for not defusing a ticking bomb and manager for indulging him through so much woefulness and putting him out there in the first place.
The game was one that Spurs largely dominated but we looked more dangerous. Eboue’s goal was touch and go. Adebayor probably didn’t deliberately trip Woodgate but his gargantuan legs undoubtedly stopped the England man from clearing the ball.
Earlier, the otherwise impeccable Gallas was fortunate to escape when in attempting to clear the ball, he only took Keane’s leg.
They had plenty of dangerous balls into the box, Almunia made a decent low save and up the other end Adebayor almost converted Clichy’s cross across goal and Eboue’s not dissimilar effort also failed to attract a touch. Talking of the Clich, I thought he came across brilliantly in the Times on Saturday. He was completely honest and made no attempt to cover up his own failings.
In the fifteen or so minutes before the red card and for a lengthy period after it, the paucity of our midfield was repeatedly exposed. Denilson was having a stinker, second best in every tackle, way of target with every pass. Song, in fairness, got better and better from a slow start and finished the game very strongly. Until the latter stages, Nasri was very, very quiet.
When the red did come, it said a lot about Eboue that we just carried on as if he were there. Not until well into the second half did RVP drop back into midfield.
It was all Tottenham after the break, but the stats showing they had had ten goal attempts to our one was grossly misleading. In their period of second half domination, only Robbie Keane’s header truly threatened.
Looking back, it was no surprise to see us up our level in the last quarter of the game. At 0-0 and with 11 v 11 you imagine we’d have roared forward in search of a winner, particularly given the strength of our bench, which was boosted by Arshavin and very happily, Eduardo.
But being a man down it was far tougher to dominate, even if Song, RVP and Bendtner all managed decent efforts. Then deep into stoppage time we left ourselves unbelievably exposed from a corner.
It was left to Sagna and Gibbs (who had replaced the bleeding from his head Clichy) to fend off four attackers. It was no surprise they failed to and that Modric found himself with a one on one.
In that moment, the misguided notion that Manuel Almunia never makes crucial saves was finally demolished once and for all. It was a stunning stop.
To be honest, for long periods I thought we were going to lose it. What with the sending-off, Spurs nemesis Adebayor hobbling off and a performance that for long periods didn’t feel quite enough backs against the wall, it certainly felt like the run might well end.
Perhaps if Spurs were not cack (they are), it may have done. But that said, we did fight, we did keep going and we improved the longer it went on and probably merited a point.
Table wise, things are not great and the odds of Sam Allardyce not doing us a favour an hardly have been huge. But that said, we now enter a new phase of our season where from seven league games, we really should be looking to notch up a lot of points.
And even with Adebayor out of the Roma game, we do now have an abundance forwards to throw on when chasing a game.

1 - Almunia, 9
3 - Sagna, 8.5
22 - Clichy, 7
5 - Toure, 6
10 - Gallas, 8.5

8 - Nasri, 6
11 - van Persie, 7
25 - Adebayor, 6
26 - Bendtner [Sub], 6.5

Arsene should heed his own words and realise that “Eboue is becoming a danger to the team”. Unfortunately he will be the first name on the teamsheet when he becomes available.
9 February 2009 at 10:05 am
if Eboue dons the arsenal shirt again,he deserves the booing of a lifetime, enough of Eboue !!
9 February 2009 at 10:19 am
Surely there is no way back for Eboue…please. A decent RB, but nothing else, irresponsible, no composure on or off the ball. I take it he must be great in training, because he can’t justify a place for his performances on the pitch. No booing, just dont want him in the team; I thought he was one of the reasons we struggled towards the end of last year because every attack down the right side was f.cked up by Eboue, so we only had 1/2 the attacking force we should had. At least we will get a rest from Ade, I hope Eduardo, Vela, Arshavin or Bendy can take their chance and keep him out. I know Ade is strong in the air (sometimes) and adds presence blah blah etc…but he isnt even winning the headers anymore, let alone holding the ball up or linking play… Hes got talent, but isnt showing any at the moment. Im glad Glad I got this off my chest!!!! I am usually positive, we have some great players and we will do well. Up the Gunners.
9 February 2009 at 10:19 am
Thought Almunia was top class yesterday. I’ve criticised hin myself in the past, but he has become a very good keeper in the last season and continues in this. Used to dread his name on the team sheet and thought of him as a bit of a clown, but he has come good. Bearing in mind his passage into the Arsenal squad in the first place (being loaned by his parent club, Celta Vigo to lower division sides) his achievment to be first choice keeper in a top European side are impressive. Maybe the same transformation can happen to Eboue…………..or maybe not. Time will tell. Good post as ever ‘Playa.
9 February 2009 at 10:20 am
One thing that hasn’t been picked up is that whilst Eboue was creating our chances and appearing everywhere it was that lack of discipline positionally that was making it almost impossible to keep hold of the ball. He was constantly berating Sagna behind him and had decided long before the sending off that it was to be the Eboue show.
That sort of behaviour is not unlike that of Adebayor and I for one and glad that those two are out for at least a game and hopefully more. For all of Clichy’s problems this year (not least having zero protection) he constantly sticks to cause and gives nothing but 100% and in the end saw off Lennon who did nothing in the second half.
I only hope that we can encourage players who want to be part of a team and that we don’t have to suffer the lack of effort shown by those that just want the glory.
9 February 2009 at 10:31 am
Nice post, Goodplaya - think you got your ratings spot on. Almunia especially - an oasis of calm, some brilliant saves; never looked bothered. Amazing what hard work and confidence can do. Also, Billy G - best game for ages; actually hope he stays now. Cheers.
9 February 2009 at 10:37 am
I think I know what,s Ade’s problem is. He has become a clown this season. He dkeeps smiling all the time. Does not appear to be serious at all in most of the games he played. I know he got a big contract last summer. He has to wipe that grin off his face. No defenders will take him seriously.
9 February 2009 at 10:52 am
About right , agreed.
Denilson again constantly wrong side when in possession and defending. He is just not learning. Song’s best game yet. Billy G awesome , without doubt our best defender. More unforced errors from Clichy Gibbs knocking on the door very soon. All this and we are undoubtedly harder to score against than 2 months ago. Cling to the tails of Chelski for another fortnight and we will finish very strongly I feel .
Maybe another season without Silverware though
9 February 2009 at 10:52 am
Whislt I completely acknowledge Eboue was a plank for getting sent off I would point out that numerous players, mainly England internationals get away with far worse dissent every week. At a stretch he might have deserved the first yellow, yet people like Rooney get away with swearing at officials repeatedly which should be a straight red card.
Just a thought.

We all can bitch about Eboue all we want but the bottom line is AW can only work with what he’s got, and I’m sorry right now with the injurys and the kids thats all he’s got. I really believe giving Ade that huge increase in salary was a mistake especially since he only showed one really strong season, & I know this all is old hat & stuff but it still pisses me off seeing him and others loafing around the pitch thinking the ball will just pop itself into the back of the net. My only concern now as everyones should be is catching Chelski and not Villa and thats gonna be hard enough. Fartin’ O’Sqeell has the Villians playing top footie and I don’t see them dropping too many points, Chelski are full of 30 somethings that can be overtaken if this current Arse side can pull there collective heads out of there collective rectums!!! This Yank is outta here y’all!!!
9 February 2009 at 11:41 am
I fought some English ref are as bias as Arsenal fans like yourself. Eboue did nothing wrong that deserve a sending off. Modric’s attack on Eboue was even sinical and deserved a strait red card, because Eboue had no ball to his feet to be attacked. Also the first yellow was pure ref ’s arrogance, nothing more.
I have seen many times players like Steven gerrard and Agbolahor getting away with the type of goals Eboue scored by giving a light noch from the back before receiving the ball.
9 February 2009 at 11:45 am
enough of blaming and scapegoating.
arsenal is no good this season, period.
if there is one person to blame, his name is arsene wenger.
i do not think we can win even if we’ve 11 players on the pitch.
even arshavin cannot save arsenal season of low life.
watching arsenal this season could cause you to die early, no due to heart attack, but boring to death.
the mundane football arsenal shown this season is reaching its pinnacle, decent enough to kill the fans.
9 February 2009 at 11:53 am
Agree with lc
Not only bias against Arsenal, but I am convinced that some English Referee are not even capable of contolling International Matches.
Arsenal were deprived of the three points by Mike Dean because as Wenger said Eboue did’nt foul Woodgate, and while I agree with the second Yellow the first one was absolutely nonsense.
This is not the only Referee that show bias against Arsenal, there are much more, and if the FA wants to be fair should not allow such referess to contol Arsenal matches
9 February 2009 at 11:58 am
ehboowee,
you’re not an Arsenal fan
You are absolutely out of order to challenge Arsena Wenger!!!!!! Who are you???Have you ant idea how football is to be playede? Arsene Wenger brought Arsenal from a decent side to on of the Elite of Brish Football period..to use yor phrase
9 February 2009 at 12:03 pm
Eboue was probably playing the best football as a Right Winger - he pass, he tackles, he dribbles, and he scores a legitimate goal that the referee see was not legitimate… Then BOMB! He did something funny to get himself sent off. When will he grow will and learn?
9 February 2009 at 12:09 pm
With the signing of Arshavin and Theo being back for the Roma game, I never expect Comrade to play RM ever again. If, somewhere down the line both AA and TW are injured, Jack Wilshere should hopefully be closer to the stage where he can play the occasionally top level game.
Also, his contract is supposedly up in the summer, so I don’t suppose we’ll ever see him start for Arsenal (I can understand him being on the bench if needs be) again. If Sagna is out, I’d prefer Djourou at CB and Toure at RB. Rumours are starting to look like we are searching for a solid back up RB so Eboue’s time really seems to be up.
We are not winning the Premiership but we will be the kingmakers, unfortunately. The fixture list is bottom heavy for us with the other teams of the traditional top 3. Our form against these teams coupled with the return of some of our greatest players (you know the names) may turn out to be incredibly helpful when it comes to stealing fourth. I’m not optimistic but people who act like the Uefa Cup will kill our chances of keeping our squad or buying outstanding players seem to have not paid attention to Sevilla (kept Alves), Bayern (kept their big names and bought the likes of Ribery and Toni) and Milan (kept their big names and bought the likes of Ronaldinho). It won’t be the end of the world, although it will still suck giant donkey testicles.
There are positives to be taken from this horrible situation - like Wenger buying Arshavin to replace Eboue. Hopefully with Glazidis now whispering in his ear that he can replace those who aren’t performing (as well as keeping his beloved yut system), we can turn ourselves around in the summer.
Also, with our backs to the wall, we are starting to see some players start to emerge as good squad options. Djourou, Song, Bendtner - these players that were once doubted are proving their worth and are fighting for their chances. They may not pull it off every week but whereas there used to be a time where I’d watch Song and think le boss was mental, now I watch him going “hmm… maybe?” Not only that, I hope to freaking God that Wenger has learnt his lessons with Eboue and Flamini how man manage these players properly.
Anyway, good article goodplaya.
9 February 2009 at 12:15 pm
Spot on with your ratings Goodplaya. Arsene should really have had some idea that Eboue was going to see red after first booking. I said to my missus ‘Wenger better sub him ‘cos he will get another yellow, especially with that c*nt of a ref’. Sadly I was right but why did Wenger not see it that way because I am sure many other fans said or thought a similar thing. Just plain bad management in my opinion. I think we do have the players coming back that can change our fortunes and of course our new Russian maestro so it ain’t all doom and gloom for rest of season. We will catch Villa and possibly Chelsea. Optomistic or what ?????????
9 February 2009 at 12:19 pm
AW is converting Eboue into playing a free role behind the strikers.
This new exciting experiment is only just beginning.
So, expect to see him named in the starting line up as soon as possible.
He is first choice ahead of Eduardo or Arshavin.
If Gallas leaves, Eboue will finally get the no 10 shirt.
All-scoring, all-creating, hard-tackling, calm, honest Eboue.
Please don’t boo the sensitive boy.
9 February 2009 at 1:09 pm
I’d love to know what Fergie thinks of the number of games Eboue gets.
9 February 2009 at 5:17 pm
I think it is time for Eboue to leave. I think if not for his sending off we might have giving Arshavin a debut and allowed Eduardo to play for the first time in eight months. Also Adebayor is now injured. Now we have to play with Bendtner up front. groan.
9 February 2009 at 5:35 pm
You fans suck. All you ever do is blame players. But isnt it the referees fault.
9 February 2009 at 7:27 pm
Scolari sacked is this the Arsneal can take advantage of chelsea.
9 February 2009 at 7:28 pm
correction is this the time for arsenal to finally take advantage of chelsea.
9 February 2009 at 7:36 pm
Eboue. Agh, I can’t take it any more. It’s not as if this was somehow out of character. Arsene shunted Jeffers out of the club for a similar misdemeanour in a meaningless Charity Shield match. I so hope he will finally have the strength of character to admit he has got this player totally wrong and get rid of Eboue after being a complete plonker in an important derby match on which much depended.
9 February 2009 at 8:52 pm
I’d love to see someone show me stats that prove Denilson was great yesterday. If so, you can surely prove anything. He was hopeless. And frankly any player in the last-minute of a derby game at 0-0 who tried as little as he did to stop the Spurs player needs a serious kick in the arse. It was disgraceful. Song has surely now cemented his place as Cesc’s partner when he gets fit.
Think people are getting a bit carried away with Almunia. He started off very poorly & I think it was him not coming for balls early that set the jitters amongst his defenders. He did do well after that for the most part but did you see his positioning for Keane’s headed miss ? You can’t get any more No Mans Land than that.
Gallas was outstanding. My only issue is that since being stripped of the captaincy he’s just concentrating on his own game rather than keeping talking at the rest of the team. And God knows we miss it cos this must be the quietest team in England by a mile. I’m not blaming Gallas personally for this by the way, it’s just the way it is. But we need a mouthpiece or two.
9 February 2009 at 9:40 pm
Denilson has played every single game in the league, CL and FA cup (minus the game at Cardiff), not counting the pre-season games. He covers more ground than any other player in almost every game although I know you don’t like stats.
He’s obviously tiring, I’ve been saying it already. He’s getting slower with each game now. I know we have too many injuries but he will be next on the list very soon if he doesn’t get rested.
Giving him the same note as Eboue is just ridiculous. There is not one single game where his attitude has been even remotely suspect, this one included. He ans Sagna where doing the work of 3 players.
Song has extraordinary athletic qualities and he’s improving as can be expected at his age. His attitude certainly has. He has a great future if he can maintains this focus.
For all his imperfections Eboue is still doing better than Giggs, Vela, Ramsey or Wilshire would. That won’t be the case for very long.
9 February 2009 at 9:45 pm
100% agreed on Almunia. I personally prefer him to mad Jens. He’s not the imposing type but makes a lot of decisive saves and many less mistakes than his predecessor.
The good news is that our defense looks definitively sorted out.
9 February 2009 at 9:46 pm
Why is it only now that people are picking up how crap Denilson is? He’s been like it all season, offering nothing other than cop out 5yard passes, I’m not convinced by the look of him that he’s not about 13yrs old, get away from my football team and take that fuckin lunatic Eboue with you, your both shite
9 February 2009 at 9:50 pm
Yet another Matt classic “Eboue is doing better than Giggs”, er yeah right, course he is……….
9 February 2009 at 9:52 pm
GOONER4EVER,
if chelsea can fire scolari in 6 months, why can’t we sacked arsene wenger?
scolari only given 6 months, arsene was given 10 years
yes, arsene brings as trophies and glories
today he bring us tears and heartbreaks
do you want to live forever on past glories?
i am not, it’s time to move on
we need some fresh air
yes, i am not an arsenal fan… i am a thinking arsenal fan
not one with emotional and myopic view… trying to blame someone when a match gone wrong
it’s been wrong from the start of the season…. so why only now you blame on one player?
i am not trying to deny facts like arsene wenger did, he is in the state of denials all season long… only nuts would believe in what he said
i would respect him more if he admit his wrongdoing, his incorrect descision trying to save a few dollars at the start of the season only to waste it on a russian(don’t get me wrong, arshavin is good player, but the amount we pay is way too much… plus our priority is to get a defensive midfielder this season)
since when do you see arsene wenger in so much stress in every matches? he has lost his heads, he has lost his philosophy of playing beautiful football
he would prefer Bendtner over Vela as arsenal is slowing becoming overly relying on long balls to get a goal… if that is the plan, you could get any lousy Englsih manager to do the job
if you think with your head, instead of your cockhead, you’ve to agree
9 February 2009 at 10:01 pm
The problem with Almunia is not that he makes many mistakes. He doesn’t; which makes him a good keeper. He does however let in far too many goals where I find myself thinking ‘could he have done better there’. ? For me, that means he’s consistent & good, but not great.
No way on earth he’s better than Jens was. When Jens was at his peak you could have argued he was the best keeper in the league. Could anyone argue that for Almunia ? No chance. There’s at least 5/6 others who are indisputedly better than him.
9 February 2009 at 10:02 pm
Meh, it’s been the same all season. Whether we win, draw or loose almost all reports have picked player X or Y.
Not so long ago Song was shite according to pundits like you. Today he is our best player. Come his next average game he’ll be worthless again and the cycle will continue for a year or two until he reaches his potential.
Don’t worry though, when Song and Denilson will have established themselves there will be even more 20 y/o players coming up the ranks for you to spit your venom.
9 February 2009 at 10:11 pm
DPK: Disagree on Lehman, I thought he was just average in his last 2/3 years. Very aesthetic and a lot of amazing saves but too many stupid errors that were adding up. He looked good but that was only if you turned a bind eye on the cost of his antics. I was really hoping that after his CL final fuck-up, Arsene would have him replaced.
I’m not saying that Almunia is the best keeper in the league but decent enough. I thought he was pretty good last year. Too bad he did not start the season, we’d have won the league.
9 February 2009 at 10:21 pm
Matt,
i support you all the way
picking on a specific player to blame on per match basis is a childish thinking
it’s a no brainer to release their anger instead of looking what is the real reason for a disastrous season
scolari is sacked for a draw with hull city at home… yet arsene wenger is untouchable with full tank of excuses and shits after losing against hull city at home
arsene wenger record this season is worst than scolari… he got the sacked when chelsea is lying on the 4th spot… because for a big club, it’s not acceptable
so it’s either arsene wenger has now growing bigger than arsenal, the club itself… or maybe arsenal no longer a big club
what a shame!
9 February 2009 at 10:22 pm
DPK i dont think you are in the right frame of mind. Almunia is definitely better than Lehmann. Look at the countless mistakes he has made when you compare to Almunia. I dont really think we would even be fifth if Jens were keeping for us now.
9 February 2009 at 10:26 pm
ehbooowea or whatever your name is sacking Wenger is not the answer.
9 February 2009 at 10:30 pm
Almunia dosent deserve a nine i personally would have given him a 7.
9 February 2009 at 10:58 pm
I thought Almunia was terrific yesterday. Along with Sagna he was our best player.
Denilson had a shocker. But the rest of the boys put in a good shift.
Would love to see Gibbs and Clichy both playing on the left. With Nasari in the middle and Arsharvin on the right.
Eboue was wound up because he had a perfectly good goal disallowed by that prick dean.
Don’t forget he was in charge of the Birmingham game last season.
Don’t get me wrong. The next time I want to see Eboue in an Arsenal shirt would be as a RB in a carling cup game.
Modric should have gone. Before he was booked he dived in the area. So effectively he should have received a second yellow.
We are still unbeaten and we are not conceding goals. And we have our best players returning at the end of the month.
Win our next home game and we will be either 5 or 4 points behind Villa or 3 or 2 points behind Chelsea.
9 February 2009 at 10:59 pm
what about replacing arsene with scolari?
and arsene goes to chelsea?
i am sure arsene will last only 1 month
9 February 2009 at 11:15 pm
There is no way Arsenal are getting rid of Wenger. That would be completely stupid on our part. Also, we just aren’t going to do it. Look at Wenger’s record over the course of his time with Arsenal. It’s excellent.
I actually think we are in okay position. With our improved defensive performances, returning/new attacking players, and upcoming schedule, we could very well climb back into the top four in the next few weeks. Now is not the time to panic.
9 February 2009 at 11:17 pm
Why would you give Almunia a 7? I can’t think of a single thing he did wrong. I thought he was confident and commanding, and overall just excellent.
Plus, he saved a point at the end there on Modric.
9 February 2009 at 11:55 pm
do i really want arsene to go?
no and not, i still love him and his brand of football
what i want to stress is there is no one sinlge player to be blamed
if you want to blame one person, then you should blame arsene wenger… he is the one who commanding the team
stop blaming one player, football is a team game
10 February 2009 at 12:22 am
The that all right with me.

And tosin says “Almunia is definitely better than Lehmann. Look at the countless mistakes he has made when you compare to Almunia. I dont really think we would even be fifth if Jens were keeping for us now.”
Hahahahahahahaha…… These comments are so funny. Haven’t laughed like this for a long time. But then the whole standard of Arsenal has dropped so much these few years or so it’s kinda expected. Almunia over Lehmann - hahahahahaha… good one gooners!
10 February 2009 at 8:51 am
We have been unlucky with injuries. Where would we be now if it was Eboue, Denilson, Song and Bendtner who had been injured instead of Cesc, Eduardo, Theo and Rosicky? Probably above Aston Villa. People say “stop whinging.” It’s not a whinge, it’s an observation. We have lost four of our six best players for an extensive period of time. Any team would suffer from that, no matter how good the squad. And our squad is the poorest it has been since Arsene arrived.
10 February 2009 at 10:17 am
Good post ‘playa. That article in the Guardian was strange to say the least. From a PR point of view, one has to wonder how much input le boss has over the articles that appear on the club’s website. Who can forget “Eboue is a pass master” appearing the day after the summer transfer window shut? They really should show a bit more respect for fans who clearly know better.
10 February 2009 at 4:49 pm
Please Arsenal fans stop talking about it being the refs fault. That only leads to players not being responsible. All of us who watched the match saw that Eboue kept on talking to the ref after he told him to stop. Did the ref throw somehow cause him to run his mouth? Eboue knew he was on a yellow and still did not control himself but I guess some of us will blame the ref for Eboue tripping Modric. I dont care if the ref was biased, the fact is if Eboue behave in a mature manner that wouldve meant nothing, he is the cause of two dropped points and us not getting to see Arshavin and Eduardo.
I wont kill Eboue and its up to Wenger to do with him what he sees fit but let’s call it like it is. 100% Eboue’s fault!
10 February 2009 at 8:06 pm
I am thinking of what Arsene will do in the summer. I hope he buys another quality player like higuain or sneijder you never know.
10 February 2009 at 8:07 pm
He just might.
10 February 2009 at 8:16 pm
Change of subject does anyone think Bendtner is shit i certainly do. He rarely scores, never gives any assistance whatsoever to the team and loses the ball to many times. Hes also painfully slow. Wenger is definitely putting to much faith in him. Well if i were Wenger i would loan him to another club for a year or two.
10 February 2009 at 9:34 pm
Matt, swings & roundabouts. You think we could have won the league if Almunia had started the season; I would argue that we could have won it if Lehmann had been playing in a couple of games
where he would have saved goals Almunia let in. e.g. Birmingham (McFadden’s free-kick) or Stamford Bridge (at least one of Drogba’s)
Think it’s extraordinary to blame Jens for CL final. He was put in an awful position because of Giberto’s rubbish pass. He didn’t have much of a choice really, hard to see how he was to blame.
11 February 2009 at 1:11 am
DPK: another one where we agree to disagree
In my view Almunia is performing very decently in a team whose self-confidence is shot. As a whole our defense finally looks adequate and I have the impression he can claim some responsibility in the improvement.
As for the CL final, I’m in the Lehman’s fault camp. He clearly grappled Etoo’s ankle and he didn’t have to as the player was through already. I just think it reflected his level of performance: a good keeper who’s been a liability too often.
11 February 2009 at 1:34 am
Here’s the program for the new signings:
Eduardo, Arshavin: ready for cameos, probably 2-3 weeks before fully available.
Home: Sunderland, Fulham
Away: West Brom
FA Cup: Cardiff H
CL: Roma H
Walcott, Adebayor: 3-4 weeks, ready for:
Home: Blackburn, Man City
Away: Roma, Newcastle, Wigan
FA Cup: Burnley + 1 more round
CL: Roma A + quarter-finals round 1
Rosicky, Fab: 6-8 weeks, ready for the final push
Home: Middlesbrough, Chelsea, Stoke
Away: Liverpool, Portsmouth, ManU
FA Cup: semi-final, final
CL: quarter-finals round 2, semi-finals rounds 1 & 2, final

DPK:How can you say we could have won the league last season with Lehmann. If lehmann were playing for us last season we might have even ended up being fourth. I don’t think Lehmann could have saved that Mcfadden goal or even Drogbas goal at Stamford bridge. Besides Lehmann isn’t very good with free kicks himself remember Hargreaves at Old Trafford.
11 February 2009 at 7:14 pm
Completely agree with you from the word go Matt.
11 February 2009 at 10:43 pm
Decently being the correct word Matt. Regardless of the Lehmann/Almunia debate …is it really ok that our best keeper is ‘decent’ ? Not for me.
Tosin, if you think you can compare Hargreaves & McFadden’s free kicks I’m sorry but it’s hard to take you seriously.
12 February 2009 at 12:19 am
I see Eduardo came on for Croatia for the last half hour and provided an assist for the winner against Romania. Promising…!
12 February 2009 at 12:20 am
I wasn’t comparing Hargreaves and Mcfaddens free kicks. I know that Hargreaves is by far a better free kick taker but i just wanted to bring up the fact that Lehmann isn’t better that Almunia in goal keeping. Lets be honest on the day neither keeper had any chance of saving any of the free kicks.
12 February 2009 at 12:21 am
DPK you are a complete moron. Almunia is by far better than Lehmann. No argument there you cunt.
12 February 2009 at 4:38 am
Except for Van der Saar and Cech (mostly before his injury though), who do you think is that much a better keeper than Almunia?
James?
12 February 2009 at 8:45 pm
Good to have you back insulting me Will, at least it’s slightly less idiotic than stealing my identity.
(and this time you managed to insult me & complete a coherent sentence - all at the same time ! Who’s a clever boy then ??)
Tosin, a top-class keeper would have saved McFadden’s. Almunia got his hand to it but just wasn’t strong enough.
Who’s better than him Matt ? The two you mentioned plus Given,Friedel without even thinking about it. None of them are even up for debate imo. James too for me. (though I’m sure loads of people still can’t see beyond the Calamity headlines. Most people would say Reina too.
Basically every other club at the top of the table has a better keeper than us.
13 February 2009 at 9:58 am
when did i impersonate you dpk.
13 February 2009 at 11:33 am
DPK for you to say that Lehmann is better than Almunia is nuts. Almunia has only made a mistake once or twice this season but Lehmann guarantees you almost a mistake in every match. The only time Lehmann played well for arsenal it eventually led to our downfall losing the champions league final
13 February 2009 at 11:34 am
change of subject, how do you think arshavin is going to do for arsenal.
13 February 2009 at 3:48 pm
Ehboowee
The day Arsenal can get rid of plastics like you we will be a truly great club. Thinking Arsenal fan my arse.
13 February 2009 at 5:17 pm
Arsenal are shit. Its all about Aston Villa baby. I think you lot should go to the Uefa cup your fellow arsenal buddies are to premature to be playing in the champions league. You never know they might win the Uefa cup. At least then you can have glory if thats what your asking for.
14 February 2009 at 11:27 am
Yeah, you’re right Nathaniel. He was hopeless. Especially when we went a whole league season unbeaten ?
14 February 2009 at 6:34 pm
Don’t forget at that time our defense was balanced and we had Viera.DPK has this finally convinced you.
14 February 2009 at 6:50 pm
Whatever Nathaniel, believe what you want. I disagree with those who say Almunia was better than Lehmann at the end of his time but I can see their argument. But to say he was never any good for us ? Ridiculous.
14 February 2009 at 11:54 pm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trAWYTrnybA Paste this link now theres a proper gooner!!!!
15 February 2009 at 12:30 am
DPK: my intent was not to bash Lehmann who served us very well (even if a bit too long past his best to my taste).
My point is that Almunia is not a problem in the team right now, far from it. Yes there are better goalkeepers but there always will be a better goalkeeper unless we get Buffon or Casillas.
15 February 2009 at 11:41 am
Matt, if you went to buy a dog I’d bet you’d go for the 3-legged,blind, deaf one ! You just love an underdog. Anyone who gets stick; you’re there to stand up for them; regardless of whether you actually believe it or not. My basic point was that Almunia is a decent keeper, no more. You specifically agreed with me on this ages ago. And yet you’re still arguing ?
You’re the one who keeps optimistically saying that this team is good enough to win titles, you then admit our keeper is just decent & yet you don’t see this as a problem ? Sorry but it makes no sense.
You’re just disagreeing for the sake of doing so at this stage.
15 February 2009 at 12:01 pm
DPK you are very smart to remember all that. but get it in your head you cunt. almunia is better than lehmann and will always be. Five people in this blog[tosin, nathaniel, swag, will and matt] have all said that almunia is better than lehmann. If five people have told you that almunia is better than lehmann and nobody has backeed up your comments that makes you a dumb fool.capice
15 February 2009 at 12:07 pm
wait four swag isn’t part of the people that agreed that almunia is better than lehmann hes that stupid aston villa fan.
15 February 2009 at 12:09 pm
DPK just dont talk i really feel like smacking you across the face.
15 February 2009 at 5:23 pm
I don’t know why this argument has lasted for so long isn’t it clear to you DPK that Almunia is better than Lehmann
16 February 2009 at 8:11 pm
I clearly need to buy a better calendar next year cos I had no prior indication that yesterday was going to be Idiot Sunday.
will, money - you are clearly two of the stupidest people on earth. And ‘iyle’ ???? Could you not make it more obvious ‘money’ ? Clearly your imaginary friend. Then again, you’re probably very short on real ones so it’s not your fault, you poor dear.
