Eduardo returns arguably better than before. Report and player ratings.

Playa Ratings

21 - Fabianski21 - Fabianski, 7

7

Did everything he had to do perfectly well. Not that he had a lot to do.
3 - Sagna3 - Sagna, 8

8

Hard as nails. Won seemingly everything and kept bombing forward, sprinting onto nice little flicks.
40 - Gibbs;40 - Gibbs;, 8

8

Very assured game from Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy's love child. Looked confident in defence and got his head up when on the ball, spraying some nice passes. And of course he bombed forward and whipped a few tasty balls in.
5 - Toure5 - Toure, 7

7

Looked very untroubled and late on it was good to see him burst in front of his man and win the ball like Kolo used to.
10 - Gallas10 - Gallas, 7

7

Looks sharp at the moment.
15 - Denilson15 - Denilson, 7

7

Fine. Some decent moments but nothing spectacular.
17 - Song17 - Song, 7

7

Similar to Denilson, perfectly decent without dominating the midfield quite as much as it felt like we dominated elsewhere. But it's a really tiny complaint.
8 - Nasri8 - Nasri, 7

7

Neat and confident without being spectacular. As an intelligent player he offers us much needed balance. His peroxide hair do has something of the Elstree 13 year-old boy circa 1995 about it.
12 - Vela12 - Vela, 8

8

I don't think I quite noticed how well he played as while I thought he'd been pretty good, others I've spoken to post game were purring. Great cross for Eduardo's goal and offered us real width and trickery.
26 - Bendtner26 - Bendtner, 7.5

7.5

Missed a few sitters. The one that hit the post was woeful, while another couple were just really well saved. But scored a very decent second at a crucial moment and as I said in the main piece, caused havoc.
9 - Eduardo9 - Eduardo, 10

10

The perfect return.
11 - van Persie11 - van Persie [Sub], 7.5

7.5

Sharp and scored with his chocolate leg.
16 - Ramsey16 - Ramsey [Sub], 6.5

6.5

Fine if unspectacular substitute appearance.
28 - Bischoff;28 - Bischoff; [Sub], 6.5

I know I'm being unduly harsh, but he still looks like someone Arsene has pulled out of a boozer on the Holloway Road and vowed to turn into a professional footballer. Did OK.
ARSENAL 4 CARDIFF 0

A return that was both touching and brilliant

AT the final whistle he could have very easily strode into the centre of the pitch and lapped up the adulation of the Emirates. Instead, Eduardo rose to his feet, blended into the general throng of substitutes and headed down the tunnel.

It was the unfussy act of an unfussy player who had let his football do the talking.

He was back with a performance beyond what any of us could have dared hope for.

There were the two goals, a penalty following a delightful header reversed across the keeper after he had fed Vela. But more than that there was a performance that offered real hope that maybe he wouldn’t be one of those players like Gazza or Alan Smith who return from serious injury 98% as good as they were, but missing that final something.

In fact Eduardo was arguably better than he’d ever been for us. His eye for a pass appeared honed, and his dribbling sharper. The nose for goal remained.

This was by far and away our best performance for some time. Yes, it was only Cardiff. But make no mistake: we were more than capable of playing poorly against them and we didn’t. In a nutshell, we always looked like scoring and they never did. And whereas for weeks we have looked scared of the goal, last night we had in our side a player at his best in front of it.

With Nasri and Vela on the wings we were rampant and Arsene was quite right to go so attacking in a game such as this. There were far too many chances for me to tell you about. Suffice to say we (Bendtner) badly screwed up one or two and their keeper was in inspired form.

A word on Bendtner: his quotes have clearly been taken out of context. And while it’s frustrating when he screws up something apparently simple, the fact is we need to stop expecting our forwards to be as technically immaculate as Henry or Bergkamp.

Bendtner netted at an important time with a very decent header and caused havoc all night.

He is also working harder than he was.

Cardiff did nothing by the way.

Paradoxically they brought with them some of football’s best supporters and some of the game’s worst supporters.

Those who sang all night were a credit to their club. Those who caused havoc on the tube and scrapped in the streets were not.

This was the first time in yonks that we’d gone into the last ten minutes of a game two goals up. Other than the League Cup, I make the last time United at home and it was no surprise that was hardly the most relaxing of affairs. I’d actually forgotten that sensation of a game being dead with 20 minutes still to play.

There is not a lot more to say really. The hope is this can be the start of something.

But in the meantime it was just great to see Eduardo again.

  1. It was a great performance, but don’t you think we are being to fast in saying Eduardo is back to his best besides we faced Cardiff. Expect more from him later this season.

  2. Eduardos back!!!!!

  3. Its nice to see that Arsenal has won a match, not that im a fan. It just makes the title race all the more tasty.

  4. The obvious headlines will all be about Eduardo today and rightly so. One can only surmise now, that but for that terrible broken leg at Birmingham, we surely would have ended last season as Champions. Let us hope his hamstring strain is really only slight, because he can make a complete difference to our season from here on in.
However the point I would like to emphasise from this match, was how different a team we looked without this year’s wasters, Eboue and Adebayor. They have been liabilities all season and I hope Wenger can take in this lesson and get rid of them. We looked far more of an enthusiastic unit with a passion that has been sadly missing lately.
Apart from his awful double miss, Bendtner was a revelation with his speed & workrate. Some of his passing was true Arsenal standard, especially the through ball to set Van Persie up for the fourth goal.
With Cesc, Theo and possibly even Rosicky due back soon, Arshavin to enter the fray, suddenly some of those dark clouds are rolling away.

  5. Its great to see eduardo pulling off master class touches. Cant wait until saturdays matches when he pairs up with rvp. hopefully

  6. With Walcott, fabregas and rosicky coming back it is good to say we are still title contenders.

  7. I’ve missed us!!!

Watching Spain the other day made me realise quite how long it’s been since we played well.

Last night we were back to form and watching Dudu was emotional. Vela was great and even Bendtner wasn’t too bad (yeah it was a sitter, but equally it came at him with pace on his wrong foot).

Does make you think how things would’ve been different without all our injuries this season.

  8. For goodness sake, this was Cardiff ! Wats all the fuss ?????????

  9. Very average arsenal dont get excited!!!!

  10. Typical Spud comment. Twat

  11. ADE watch out theres a new guy in town and his name is EDUARDO

  12. Vela and Nasri MUST start on the wings every game.

    RVP and Eduardo upfront.

Then we become more Brazil like where we may conceade 3 goals but we will score 4 or 5 and the fans cannot wait till the next game not this rubbish that we have played for so long now.

  13. Judith Le'Strange

It was great to see Eduardo back and even better to see him score. It’s his strength of character that makes him the player he is and will become again, which makes a mockery of Rosicky starting out with only a hamstring and then being out for more than a year.

  14. You arsenal fans seem desperate cheering for a small nonentity of a team you have just beaten. Arse en al is just a dopey team.

  15. The feelgood factor is here; Eduardo is back after suffering criminal assault and - even better - Eboue was not even in the stadium.

  16. hahahahahah in your dreams you aint even been to the new wembley and you wont be going….can you remember what silverware is muggins

  17. Were going to Wembley you aint.

  18. Manu forever - If you want to know what the fuss is about I’m sure you can youtube “Eduardo Injury”.

The fuss is about a bloke who might’ve had his leg amputated instead having the guts and courage to go through the pain, go through the rehab and get exactly what he deserved; something I never thought I would never see happen.

This isn’t a dig at you as I have enough respect for United not to be disappointed should they win the shiny trophies again. And true, Arsenal may still finish 5th, they might get knocked out by Burnley and Roma and it might still be a season to forget. But everyone, gooners, neutrals or even those who detest Arsenal, if you couldn’t appreciate “what the fuss was about” last night you aren’t a football fan in the purest sense. Everyone should’ve applauded that.

  19. Dear oh dear…they are all singing like canary, scoring after about 10 goaless boring draws, welcome to the club thats how man utd feel scoring day in day out

  20. mistake a canary

  21. manu forever - you’ve scored 41 goals to our 38 in the league, that’s hardly a big difference. The difference between our clubs is your defence, so if you’re going to attack part of our team, go for that.

Your defence is a credit to you, but you do realise Pool, Chelsea and City have scored more than you this season, don’t you?

  22. Manu forever - are you too stupid to know when you’ve been put in your place? Read what White Ox said again….then fuck off.

Spuds and spurs forever…just know that you’ll always be in our shadow……then fuck off.

  23. Ok, it was only Cardiff….the same Cardiff who gave us such a hard time 3 weeks ago. Sunderland will be a tougher test (tougher defence anyway), but we should start to build momentum now. It was brilliant to see us playing wengerball again. Suddenly it’s good to be a gooner again.

  24. love eduardo

  25. YAAAAAWN

  26. Manu forever’s comments perfectly explain the mindset of a manure fan. To him it’s not about supporting your club through ups and downs it’s about having bragging rights over people you’ve never met. I’m pretty sure he had a brief flirtation as a Chelsea fan in the Mourinho days.

I think you are being quite harsh on Bischoff. He didn’t do anything amazing but most his passes were neat and one touch and he looked to play the ball forwards most times not to mention his attempt on goal.

  27. UM may i remind you about that five one result last season. You lot were completely outclassed. Theres no way my beloved spurs are going down….silverware less than 12 months ago remember?another final in a couple of weeks…you hav nt

  28. Cheers Goodplaya - Loved seeing that 10 for Dudu !!

This is an Arsenal blog - spuds and mancs - are your blogs so dull that you have to write your “My dad’s bigger than your dad” crap on here ? Sad.
A-A to come.. then Cesc and Theo !! Good times.

  29. dont agree with Song’s rating !! thot he was a monster in midfield.. broke up most of cardiff’s attacks..

  30. Good performance last night, Eduardo was back looking good but don’t expect the world the next few games he will be on the bench it takes time. Vela has needed to get more of a chance to prove himself the last few games where he’s played Eboue or Diaby on the right, I was calling for Nasri and Vela come in on the left. This would of changed our results massively we’ve been needing his speed, darting runs, just attacking minded creating more oppotunitys. Bendtner was class tonight you can see how much he is improving and trying to prove all the doubting arsenal fans wrong. Everything other than his miss he was as good as Eduardo.

  31. We’ve suffered of late but the goods times feel like they’re just around the corner. Movement, intelligence and creativity are back. My only minor complaint about last night was that Wilshere didn’t get on.

With Walcott, Fabregas and Arshavin to supplement what we saw last night, then we can be hopeful that the rest of the season might be cracking. Adebayor needs to pull his proverbial socks up to justify his presence in the team. Undeniably an Adebayor in form is a real handful and in tough away games he’d be my choice up front but whether you can transplant footballing intelligence, I’m not so sure.

By the way, “Spurs forever’ why don’t you just embarrass yourself somewhere else. I f I supported a team that spent so much money and was in danger of being relegated I would be ashamed to boast about a MIckey Mouse Cup. (sorry I didn’t use words of two syllables as this no doubt will have flown right over his pin head!)

    Come on you Reds!

  32. 5-1 against our reserves you mean? Ouch. You frlliywhites couldn’t even create chances against us a week ago when we gave you an extra man on the pitch. But you’re right, league cups where even relegation threatened teams like Boro and Hull City put their reserve teams out are mighty prestigous things to win. By the way, is the DVD of your 0-0 at the lane last week out yet?

  33. Also to add to that Gibbs played out of his skin didn’t put a foot wrong and retained the ball very well. Song missed placed over 4 basic passes giving the ball to Cardiff in awfull position it was lucky they couldn’t take advantage. As a DM he can not be doing this. I’m confident in songs ability just stupid mistakes.

  34. See why people laugh at arsenal fans. The title race is back on becos you beat Cardiff in a replay? If you win the title this year i will literally eat my underpants

  35. Bops what game was you watching if anything it was denilson that broke Cardiff down tackling and incepting their midfield.

  36. cardiff are no pushovers, unbeaten in 13 games and 5th in the championship with 4 games in hand. Derby on the other hand are woeful as of last season and are 17th. So forgive us for getting emotional for outplaying and outclassing cardiff for the full 90 minutes in every department. ANd the fact that the goal post and some fantastic saves from Heaton saved cardiff’s blushes makes it more convincing for us gunners who have drawn our last 3-4 games. And eduardo’s return!

So these so call spurs and manu fans are just sad, no life scums. why are you here in an arsenal blog reading and commenting may i ask? P*ss of will ya.

  37. Sure you beat utd 2-1 at the larger library, despite defending for 60% of the match. If it was not for some shocking misses by UTds frontline, Arsenal would have lost 6-1!

  38. Becos you arsenal annoy me

  39. Will you spurs and manu fans piss off you are just making shitty comments Go to your own blog. shooo please shooooo

  40. Manu forever I actually think you have already eaten your underpants as what you say is complete and utter gibberish. First off Arsenal scored two goals so how you ’should’ have won 6-1 is really quite mystifying. Secondly considering the match was played at ‘the larger library’ how could we have lost 6-1? Don’t you mean 1-6? And why is it our problem if your strikers can only score against the Boltons of the world?

  41. Arsene should adebayor and eboue its safe to say we dont need them any more

  42. You know rocko you mentioned bolton. When big sam was manager you lot were struggling against bolton.

  43. Very assured game from Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy’s love child

Cheers, now I have to be sick!

But brilliant to see Dudu back though.

  44. yeh vela and eduardo made the difference
bendtner played pretty well too but those two with nasri brought back the classic arsenal passing game a little bit
their movement was excellent and their passing really intelligent plus vela is a really good dribbler
ive thought this the whole time - if wenger had just played vela on the left - no creativity crisis,
and unfortunately i think hes going to lose his place to arshavin straight away
    he doesnt deserve to tho

  45. [...] match reports from Goodplaya and Arseblog, with some ominous news about Usmanov. I’ll try and find out some more about [...]

  46. i’m sorry for my earlier comments chaps - my goldfish ruud died last night and it’s made me feel empty inside.

i shouldn’t take it out on others though - please accept my humble apologies

  47. Firstly let me say im not an arsenal fan. im a little confused though. When arsenal are at their best[unbeaten season etc] they truly are a team to be afraid of, but this was cardiff at home. Now after the season you have had, i dont blame you for getting excited at a few goals scored, and a clean sheet kept. But i think you have a long way to go to get back to your best. The next ten games will give us an indication if you are close to reaching what you are capable of. My hunch is that you will finish in the top four, but i think it will be very tight.

  48. Not sure who the above lad is. but i make no apologies. i stick to what i am saying

  49. ruud - why did you have to leave me ??

i guess its better to have loved and lost then never to have loved at all - we’ll always have valentines day - i’ll never forget it.

god bless ruud - the bestest goldfish ever xx

  50. assasins -
That’s cool. Come on to an Arsenal blog and make intelligent comments; welcome!
It’s the tiny tots who pi*s us off, because it’s so mindless.
manu : Atleast you have a SOH..

  51. Doh! Didn’t see the wind up.. nice one, goldfish manu!

  52. Shut the fuck off goldfish you fucking retard

  53. Kind of a bit childish all this…

  54. i’m sorry for my language (mild torrets) - it just hurts so much

  55. The title race is never quite the same without Arsenal in my opinion. Agreed from a chelsea fan

  56. Your a sad person impersonating me. I guess you dont have your own life and you decide since i have a better personality than you decide to be like me. Kinda gay dont you think.

  57. yes, for a manu fan you sure know and watch alot of arsenal games. And arsenal defended for 60% of the match when we played manutd at emirates? for a moment there i thought you were serious haha.. you’re funny!

which one is more annoying- getting excited over eduardo or sneaking into an arsenal blog and giving irrational and bringing down arsenal in every comment they make here? hmm…

And again, there is nothing wrong for us gooners getting all emotional for eduardo’s 2 goal and return from a horrific injury. So far only one gooner on here have said the we are tittle contenders again. No one is deluded, just happy that we get to see the real arsenal playing again after scoring just 1 in 4 games and after a run of pathetic results. In fact we know manutd are gonna win the epl. there, you happy?

  58. Yeah just wanted to hear you say that im disappearing as of now.

  59. What a dumb blog how can there be a fight about arsenal and man u all the way hear.58 comments in just a single morning. You arsenal fans are just way too jealous of man u

  60. Great blog as always Goodplaya. Dudu’s awesome return was no surprise to me at all. He IS a class act and I have never been in any doubt about that. He has shown great mental strength to come through all that he has and will hopefully lessen the lanky one’s automatic inclusion week in week out. Carlos Vela surely has to be very close to being a first team regular. He was particularly impressive last night.

I don’t know why Sp*rs and Manure fans would even bother reading Arsenal blogs ?? Human beings can indeed be a strange lot.

Gibbs is coming on nicely too. All in all a very impressive performance regardless of the opposition.

  61. Ignore the trolls people.

Eduardo starting was a bonus, him getting two goals was terrific, and knowing that he’d be playing a role for us the rest of this season: priceless.

Heh Goodplaya, re: Bischoff. I’d still prefer Bischoff to Eboue though.

It was also good to see Cesc with the team.

  62. [...] Goodplaya wrote an interesting post today on Eduardo returns arguably better than before. Report and player ratings. Here’s a quick excerptIt was the unfussy act of an unfussy player who had let his football do the talking…. [...]

  63. Bit of an odd crowd in today, Playa - that’s what you get for posting first thing in the morning before the kids have had their ritalin.

Don’t often disagree with your ratings, but I thought Denilson was exceptionally good last night - one of those all too rare games which makes me see why Arsene/Myles Palmer think he could be another Dunga or Deschamps. He really snapped in well and his distribution was quicker and more accurate than normal.

I thought Bischoff looked very decent, and did much more than Ramsey with his time on the pitch. Physically, I can’t think of many previous Arsene players he reminds me of, although Wilshere is a bit of a mini-version.

Finally, I thought Bendtner’s work rate was exceptional last night. He’d have been forgiven for hanging around the box as the lead striker, but for 90 minutes, he kept getting into space out right and left, and coming short to collect the ball to feet from midfield. A great performance.

  64. Like the ritalin stuff (the joke that is, not actually ritalin).

Yeah Bischoff did OK. Physically he reminds me of a bloke in the pub.

  65. I think when we get our players back we will beat all top 3 teams. although we might have to sacrifice Nasri, adebayor and vela in the process,i have a genuine belief that we will beat them.

  66. Well this is definitely arsenals finest performance of the season. First time i have seen them play so well for a long time. I think arsene should offload Adebayor, eboue and maybe Diaby since their not needed and bring another defensive midfielder. Let the good times roll for Arsenal.

  67. I don’t think we should worry about selling anyone just yet. Let’s enjoy the fact that we have some depth on the bench and that we can still compete in three competitions. Getting these players back from injury could give us the fresh legs and energy we are going to need the rest of the way. It’s still a long way to go, and all our players will have a chance to make an impact.

  68. Yesterday was all the good things about football, even some of the Cardiff fans. My 17 year old daughter was run over in December and spent 4 weeks in intensive care. One of her injuries is a very badly brken leg tib and fib. She made her second visit to the ground since her accident in a wheelchair. On the way there and back we had many offers of help dealing with steps and trains, including 2 mid twenties Cardiff lads in fancy dress! On the pitch was her inspiration and he scored two goals, if he can get back to playing football she will sure as hell walk. A great evening and a great game as well.

  69. A nice feelgood day that was. Thanks for the report GP!

PS7: Nice story, I hope your daughter will be on her feet soon.

Some Welsh paper had some fun with our support though, let’s hope it will improve along with the team’s performances… Quoting:

It wasn’t long before Arsenal fans’ reputation as reluctant singers was the subject of much mirth around the ground with Cardiff fans good-naturedly taunting their hosts’ lack of chanting.
Referring to the Gunners’ previous home ground of Highbury and its long-standing reputation as “a library”, City fans launched into “Arsenal Sing Us A Song”.
Even when the home team raced into a 2-0 lead, their fans among the 57,237 crowd still spurned the opportunity to sing.

  70. What did Bendtner really say?
Well, I’ve checked it out in the Danish press. From what I’ve found, it seems he was talking to Ekstra Bladet, the equivalent of the Daily Star, so what his reported comments were may not be what he really said. But what he was reported as saying is (in my translation, which is of course open to challenge):
“Arsenal is a big club and they will obviously buy new players. From my point of view, they can buy whoever they want. I really enjoy the competition for places. But if I’m 100% fit, I actually feel that it is fair/just that I should play.” This last bit is a literal translation and is open to interpretation, both in what he means and how to translate it. I would normally translate it as “I have a legitimate claim to play” or “I’m entitled to play.”
What seems to have got into the British press is that he said that he thought he was entitled to start 100% of the time which he very clearly did NOT say.

  71. Great stuff the other night. Highlight of season so far seeing Eduardo back. Amazed that more people haven’t commented on his size ? Particularly his upper body. Obviously all that time in the gym as opposed to the training pitch. You often see players come back after that length of time out physically stronger but having lost 1/2 a yard of pace. Didnt seem to be anything wrong with his pace so who knows;maybe he will be even better than before.

  72. D.P.K DICK PICK N NICK

  73. My eyes got a little moist around the 20 minute mark.
    Good to see him back.
Lets hope they can play like that with the mackems snapping at their ankles (poor phrase in view of dudu, but you know what i mean!).

I think Bendtner meant that he’s doing his utmost to force AW to play him every minute of every game. I really liked the effort he put in against cardiff, chasing lost causes is a part of a strikers job (Mr Adebarndoor please note!), even tho he missed some good chances. If Adebarndoor put the work in, I wouldn’t mind his lack of goals soooo much.

  74. BLOODY HELL Eduardo is ruled out for two weeks with a hamstring injury. Serious blow for us thats for sure

  75. I lately came across your blog and have been learning along. I thought I would leave my first remark. I don

  82. These people at the fed are not fooling anyone. The Fed bought the paper at $1 face value from the banks and will probably sell it back to the banks at a nickle, meaning the banks will reap a 95 cent gain as the FED is virtually backing an elaborate counterfeit operation by creating the 95 cents out of the air (via at the expense of American savers through an inflation based tax and game called Seigniorage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seigniorage.
