Arsenal players finally play like Arsenal players. Report and ratings.
On paper Denilson, Diaby, Bendtner, Eboue and Nasri may not look like a midfield for the ages. But in practice they showed just what can be achieved with effort, pressure, tempo - call it what you will.
It’s never a bad thing if at the end of the night you’re ruing chances to extend your lead.
And it’s a very Arsenal thing for us to resort into debates about how bad the opposition were.

His goalscoring record pointed to a miss. But at least he was trying.
They weren’t great but that’s because from the off we tore into them. And for 90 minutes we sustained it.
It could - should - have been more than 1-0. But 1-0 is still a great result. It means they have to beat us by two goals or on penalties.
You look for heroes on night’s such as these, but in reality everyone shone from back to front. They played like Arsenal players.
The galling thing is that it was so different to last Saturday and so many times this season.
Being slightly more up for the big occasion is excusable human nature but the gulf between what we have seen in the space of four days is not really acceptable if we’re honest.
The defence was faultless, apart from half of it not being there at the start of the second half. Even when Motta did come close it was from a brilliant turn, run and shot taken without breaking stride. And Almunia pulled out the kind of crucial save he has long been criticised of not making.
In midfield it occurred to me that really Song’s game doesn’t do Denilson many favours and Denilson’s game doesn’t do Song many favours. An on-song Diaby who drove us forward coupled with a Flaminiesque performance from Denilson ensured proper balance.
The best thing about Eboue and Bendtner is that there were no theatrics, no histrionics and no sloping around not really trying.
When none of those things happen glaring misses become far more acceptable in my book.
The crowd was interesting last night. They responded to the team’s bright start and were vociferous throughout the first half, at the start of the second a few misplaced passes coupled with his miss risked bringing out the Bendtner baiters who revel in nothing more than having a go at him. Their groans were audible, as was the more general dissatisfaction every time anyone passed a ball astray.
But in the end they were drowned out by the vast majority who recognised the odd error as nothing more than a minor kink in an otherwise excellent performance.
The team-crowd dynamic is an interesting one: they have a duty to raise us by trying hard and we have a duty to respond in kind. It was great to see players and fans back on the same sheet last night.
That’s just about your lot for now. If nothing else I dearly hope this inspires us to really go, go, go for that Champions League place. There is something so special about the tournament after Christmas and watching half-time highlights on the big screen of United v Inter is just so much better than doing the same for their city rivals against Copenhagen.

I have no idea what game you watched my friend but from where I was sitting Bendtner was appalling, he isn’t good enough and that miss sums him right up, he left Clichy stranded time and time again, he was lazy, didn’t get back to assist Clichy, his first touch was non-exsistent, this is the second time he has had the chance to prove doubters like myself wrong and he has failed.
Song brings the whole team down when he plays he has no idea how to create and he isn’t good enough his shot at goal was laughable, I haven’t seen one good game from him and what a joy it will be to get Rosicky,Walcott and Cesc back so we get back to doing what we do best, play football.
25 February 2009 at 11:22 am
ain’t life funny. I think Bendtner has improved out of sight. I see him developing as an Alan Smith type of player who can hold the ball up, and believe me I think he has had some shockers. As for Eboue well enuf said, let’s hope Portsmouth get out the cheque book this summer
25 February 2009 at 11:30 am
I agree with Paul B, Bendtner’s first touch and shot simply weren’t good enough. He causes problems as a sub but not a starter.
I hate to say it but I thought Eboue was man of the match in the first half. His industry and dribbling were totally unrecognisable. OK, he fluffed his shot and should release the ball early rather than run into players looking for a foul, but we know he has no football brain. The crowd almost gave him a standing ovation when he was subbed, which should pick his confidence up a bit. I would much rather Wenger dropped him (down a well), but if he’s going to persist in playing him, we need the confident, hard-working Eboue we saw last night rather than the lazy careless cheat we’ve seen for the last 3 years.
25 February 2009 at 11:34 am
I think Denilson, Diaby and Nasri had an excellent game. The pace was incredible, and there was a moment in second half when Roma tried to get the ball from defense to their midfield, and we just read the passes, stepped up, and counter attacked like there was no tomorrow. How hard can it be to find this spark and motivation for the PL games?? I mean every game is like a cup game now. Bendtner was clumsy, but he is still young (as everyone else) and i think he´s an excellent backup player for Ade, VP, Eduardo and Arshavin.
25 February 2009 at 11:34 am
We need to get over the idea that every player is going to have the touch of Bergkamp…
25 February 2009 at 11:39 am
I know you don’t like Eboue but come on 7…like Bendtner…it’s not really fair. Eboue was probably the best Arsenal player on the pitch yesterday night… at least during the first 30 minutes.
25 February 2009 at 11:46 am
Paul B, I think you’ll find Song had a good game v Spurs just 3 games ago. Song and Denilson have been given a lot of stick lately but they are both defensive players and we have kept 5 clean sheets in a row, so to be fair to them they are doing their jobs.
25 February 2009 at 11:47 am
i have been calling for arsene to mix things up a bit by changing formation and last night showed how important doing that can be.
we looked dynamic again. the fluidity was back and we played with a great tempo. playing nasri and diaby in front of denilson proved to be a masterstroke.
denilson played as well as i have seen him play. we need to realise that denilson is more gilberto than fabregas. he breaks play up and keeps it simple. his problem is he has been playing alongside song and then he is expected to be the creative player, which just is not his game. there is nothing wrong with denilson playing sideways pass after sideways pass and giving it to the more creative players, just as long as song isn’t in the team doing the same thing too!
nasri was impressive, as was diaby. the formation really suited them both. imagine taking bendtner away from the left hand side, eboue from the right, and replacing them with arshavin and walcott. even without cesc that formation would give us a real fluidity.
i just hope arsene sticks with it for the fulham game. give fulham something to think about rather than the straight forward 442.
25 February 2009 at 11:51 am
A really nice way to bounce back and make Roma look like an ordinary team, not the one that’s been on a run of their own in the Serie A.
I wonder what Wenger’ll do with the formation against Fulham especially with Arshavin available. I hope Diaby recovers.
25 February 2009 at 11:58 am
a lot of you guys watched the game with colour tinted glasses. van persie is decent at best. bendtner was the worst player on the pitch. eboue was the man of the match with all those clever runs. his runs opened up the defence and it’s that kind of things we’ve been missing of late. nasri was average. denilson was ok. sagna was back to his best. clichy was decent but we all know he is nowhere near as good as he was last season. gallas and toure were solid. almunia didn’t have much to do but did extremely well when called upon. i hope eboue is finally fired up because with the signing of arshavin and the return of walcott and rosicky, competition is fierce in his position. if he can perform consistantly, i would be happy to keep rosicky and walcott out of competitive football for a little longer so that they won’t suffer any complications from being rushed back.
25 February 2009 at 12:00 pm
Paul B, As much as Bendtner missed controled it three times in the game and fluffed 2 opportunities. He’s looking better and better. He is under the spot light of every arsenal fan every week. You probably didn’t realise it was his ball that got Van Persie in the box. He’s improving and he gave alot to the team last night. We won 1-0. Were in a good position you need to stop digging him out. He will prove you wrong soon.
Denilson had a very good game and surprisingly Diaby worked well with him in the midfield made us less defensive when you compare it to Song/Denilson. But one thing we didn’t have last night was any of the central pairing giving the ball away. It’s been a regular occurence of sloppy passing and missed placed passing. Good performance all Over the field.
25 February 2009 at 12:01 pm
Eboue would have got an 8 had he scored that chance. It was a big moment in the tie and he should have scored but didn’t. I don’t think it unfair to penalise him for that.
25 February 2009 at 12:05 pm
Really, really good post, Goodplaya.
I really like the fact that you still rated Bendtner and Eboue, misses aside, because their overall contribution in the game was generally good.
Glad to see that you accept that Denilsons biggest problem in many games has been Song - and Songs complete lack of movement and attacking sense - really good game again from Denilson.
Wenger should also get some credit for tactics. I think Roma had been preparing for Bendtner up front, RvP just behind him and Nasri left, and although it cost us some ( Nasri missed two, that Bendtner or RvP probably would have got and Bendtners touch was much worse than usual - probably due to unfamiliar position) Wenger yesterday made a really good tactical decision.
Cardiff game aside - since the Portsmouth game(Gallas late header) our matchwinners have been RvP, Nasri and Bendtner. Keep it up guys.
And lastly, why wasn’t Vucinic playing?
25 February 2009 at 12:07 pm
The work rate of certain individuals was certainly noticeably increased. The tempo was up and Roma struggled with it. Early in the second half we were intercepting every clearance and turning it into a counter attack. However there were a few times when a played in a forward position needed support and had to turn back due to a lack of options.
Bendtner’s first touch cost us at least one goal, but I was pleasantly astonished to see him clearing at the edge of our own box as well.
Song: Pleat was spot on. Roma enjoyed their best spell after he came on for Diaby and slowed things down by not playing forward balls. I know that’s not his job as such, but the effect was there.
Eboue: When the ball came to him for that one on one it was clear that he wouldn’t score. His body language showed that he had no confidence and I wondered if that was a legacy of the rough ride he has had from fans. Replays showed VP11 racing in to support for what would have been a tap-in, but Eboue was almost like a rabbit in the headlights and didn’t see it.
Still, a performance like that and a decent result was pretty satisfying. Can we keep up the temp for our game please?
25 February 2009 at 12:20 pm
It was a real tonic to see us play like that last night. I honestly thought we might never see that kind of commitment and passion again from this squad.
But I came away thinking that if we had put that level of effort in to the League matches against West Ham (h), Spurs (a), Sunderland (twice), Aston Villa (h), Middlesbrough (a), Fulham (a), Man City (a), Hull (h), Stoke (a) and Everton (a) we’d have 27 more points than we have and be running away with the title, 10 points clear at the top.
25 February 2009 at 12:38 pm
i thought eboue was our best player yesterday, very unlucky not to get a goal & assist too, but its not unusual to have really good european games..he was immense against milan last season, good in the first leg but his running was unbelievable in the san siro…his problems were mental & never ability related…but the way he’s become a cheap target for fans has made me side with him even more..anyway i really hope he gets that goal soon! 7 was very low for him, rvp scored but aside from that didnt too too much, denilson was superbly effecient…diaby was mosr consistant but without his usual amazing moments..he only annoyed me like twice! the two centrebacks were terrific, i’m talking attackingly, they really got involved & started moves with intent.
25 February 2009 at 1:44 pm
Mo - Eboue hasn’t become a cheap target, as if by accident or misfortune. He has made himself one by acting like a prat.

For me Nasri was man of the match, Eboue is a headless chicken waiting to down at the first touch, Song I recall missed a sitter against the Spuds, he along with Bendtner are not up to scratch, this was the same team the Mancs put seven past and we could have done the same but for sloppy finishing, do not kid yourself that Roma are any good, they were there for the taking and we failed to take advantage, the only good thing is that Walcott and Eduardo should be fit.
Bendtner is over-rated and very lazy with a bad first touch, he has had ample time to prove himself but has failed, he along with the work shy Song are at best subs or reverse players.
When Song came on, Roma had more of the ball because simply Song was a liability, Wenger’s blind loyalty to below par players has cost us, yes we have had injuries, but then so have other teams.
25 February 2009 at 4:50 pm
I have said it on this blog before, no Arsenal forward should be compared to Bergkamp, his skills and touch are unmatched. I thought Bendtner did well getting back on defense yesterday, I actually did a double take a few times because I couldn’t believe how far he tracked back, usually RVP is doing that.
Diably started last season in top form for about eight games, then suffered a few injuries and yesterday was the first time since then I have seen him fully back. He created very well, was aggressive and with the help of Nasri, really controlled the middle of the field.
Ever since Cesc went down, I wanted to see Nasri in the middle in some fashion, he hold the ball well, makes intelligent passes and works tirelessly, it was great to see.
Hope they can keep up the intensity this weekend.
25 February 2009 at 6:17 pm
In that game, how many goals could a fit Eduardo have scored…….
Eboue always takes on one player too many.
a few balls came to Bendtner behind him and with too much speed, but he managed to c*ck up plenty of them on his own, but he did work hard.
25 February 2009 at 6:34 pm
Good performance by arsenal but the worrying fact is with all the opportunities we had we failed to score a goal from open play
25 February 2009 at 7:21 pm
I really think that some fans are far too hard on Bendtner. He mis-controls occasionally, and misses a few chances, but so does Ade, and Nicklas is only 20. We have plenty of cover up front, so I’d be happy to see him given some time to improve.
Eboue is another story. His confidence is just so fragile that you never know which player will show up from minute to minute, let alone game to game. He does have talent, but something is broken upstairs.
Still, not to dwelll on the negatives - that was our best performance in a long time. Now to carry it forward into the league . . .
25 February 2009 at 8:25 pm
First game in months where our central midfield have come out & taken a grip of the game & created real momentum. And what a difference it makes. (believe me you don’t need stats to show that was Denilson’s best game in ages)
And then Diaby gets injured……..- is he made of glass ?
I think everyone’s being very kind to Eboue saying his miss was down to confidence. For me, it was simply down to his complete lack of vision & a footballing brain. When he’s running with pace & power he can be effective but when it comes to end product….nothing there I’m afraid. Last night was his best performance in ages but even at this best…..sorry Mo, he wasn’t unlucky not to get a goal or an assist. He just wasn’t good enough. Still, credit where credit’s due; he’s mostly cut out the cheating & his workrate’s stepped up dramatically so he’s not the complete liability he was.
Paul B, think you’re very hard on Bendtner. May well have played poorly but lazy ? Certainly not last night. Gave it everything he had.
Should have it wrapped up last night but half of me still thinks we’ll murder them in 2nd leg cos we were so much better than them.Other half thinks they couldn’t be as bad again & it could be a tough night. First goal over there will be absolutely crucial.(then again when isn’t it I guess
25 February 2009 at 8:32 pm
Great to see the effort last night, a real change. Although I realize that Bendtner is young, his first touch is absolutely shocking. Eboue worked hard-which you would expect as a minimum- and fair play to him for that. However he has no football brain and therefore no end product. One particular time last night he broke well through the centre but amazingly failed to spot RvP waiting to be slipped in on the left and we all saw the miss. Admirable performance but ultimately not good enough. Diaby and Nasri were excellent
25 February 2009 at 8:52 pm
“Admirable performance but ultimately not good enough.”
Not referring to the team just in case there’s confusion! Was a great performance!
25 February 2009 at 9:37 pm
DPK from where I sit Bendtner left Clichy exposed, in the end Roma were crossing balls to the left hand side because Bendtner was nowhere to be seen, he didn’t do enough, he is a fourth choice striker no more, his work rate is questionable and from what I have seen so far I am not impressed, I have been on the fence this season with Bendtner and in my opinion he doesn’t cut it for Arsenal.
In the PL and CL you have to finish not have chance after chance, if we go out to Roma I believe a lot of fans will look at last night’s game and remember Bendtner with his misses, he is not good enough for Arsenal
25 February 2009 at 9:49 pm
Paul mate, never argued with you about his quality. There’s definitely still a big doubt over whether he’s good enough. I think earlier in the season his workrate was very questionable too but last night he worked very hard & was clearly knackered when he went off. He may have left Clichy exposed the odd time but he’s hardly used to playing out there.
25 February 2009 at 10:18 pm
For me he is a sub at the most, I just don’t believe he will improve, I may be wrong and I would eat humble pie if he proves doubters like me wrong, but when I watch him play with the ball and off the ball I don’t believe he’s got it and I don’t think he ever will
26 February 2009 at 5:26 am
Nice posting. I love your insights into the crowd…
“The team-crowd dynamic is an interesting one: they have a duty to raise us by trying hard and we have a duty to respond in kind. It was great to see players and fans back on the same sheet last night.”
I totally agree… you are a true gooner…. and for all the faults this team has, it was refreshing to see the heights these boys can acheive when they are rolling.
26 February 2009 at 11:53 am
“In the PL and CL you have to finish not have chance after chance, if we go out to Roma I believe a lot of fans will look at last night’s game and remember Bendtner with his misses,”
You could easily subsitute Bendtners name for Adebarndoors name here!
Get well soon dudu.
26 February 2009 at 6:05 pm
Andy, I can’t agree more, I can’t wait to see a dudu RVP front line, that is going to be amazing.
27 February 2009 at 10:47 am
And how often did bendtner or VP have the ball wide, put their head up and see zero team mates running into the box. If AW is looking for another striker this summer, he must must must look for someone to play in the box (like Dudu), not outside of it like the others.
