Goodplaya survey results: Over 1,000 opinions on Almunia, Clichy and Gibbs
ON FRIDAY I launched the second ever Goodplaya survey and over a thousand of you took the time to respond. Thanks.
Firstly, congrats to Stuart McKay on winning the ArsenalTVOnline subscription.
Now, onto the results. And we’ll start with the relatively uncontroversial topics of Manuel Almunia and the left-back berth.
A year ago I asked if Almunia would become a world class keeper given time. Just 11% said he would. This year I asked if he was now a top-class keeper (I should have said world class again) and most of you said he was.
Almunia is now a top class goalkeeper:
Agree strongly: 172—–17%
Tend to agree: 503—–51%
Neither agree or disagree: 192—–19%
Tend to disagree: 96—–10%
Disagree strongly: 26—–3%
As for Gael Clichy’s dip in form, the consensus is it is nothing serious:
Clichy’s dip in form is just a blip:
Agree strongly: 495—–50%
Tend to agree: 371—–38%
Neither agree or disagree: 66—–7%
Tend to disagree: 45—–5%
Disagree strongly: 6—–1%
But were it to be, there is confidence in Gibbs:
Gibbs looks a good back-up to Clichy:
Agree strongly: 388—–39%
Tend to agree: 440—–45%
Neither agree or disagree: 111—–11%
Tend to disagree: 45—–5%
Disagree strongly: 0—–0%
None of that was too controversial. But in part two, which I’ll post shortly, we look at the far less clear cut issue of central defenders.

I would def like to see Gibbs get more time. He may be a bit naive defensively but going forward he is twice the player Gael is. He used to play a creative role for Arsenal reserves and England before Arsenal moved him to left back, he can pass far more accurately than Clichy (who’s crossing this season has been a disgrace) and has a good shot on him. Clichy has been poor defensively anyway so i don’t see that we would be losing all that much. I love Clichy but from the middle of last season he has lost form and thats a long time for any team to tolerate poor form, the pressure of some games on the bench watching Gibbs whip accurate crosses in can only be a good thing for him and us. Can’t see how over a year of poor or at the least on off form can be seen as a blip. Clichy has gone back considerably. Gibbs def deserves his chance.

Dont agree that Clichy’s form has been dodgy for a whole year. If that were so he wouldnt have gotten into the premier league of the season team would he now???

i agee strongly with rayman. clichy’s off-form has been going on for long and surely cannot be classified simply as a blip. gibbs has shown much better form for the few games he’s featured in. gibbs deserves a chance.

Actually Clichy’s form started to dip last year when he became prone to a serious mistake once a game and this has contunued this season. His confidence now is so low that he doesn’t close players down and is caught out of position when he doesn’t have the ball and this puts pressure on the defense. When he has the ball his passing, particularly crossing, is very poor. Gibbs did nothing wrong when he played and bringing Clichy straight back in sends the wrong message. I’ve often thought that Arsene isn’t ruthless enough when a player isn’t performing and the list is long and headed by Eboue. I say give Gibbs some time and let Gael recover some of what made him so good.

i dont think clichy has been *that* bad, but has slipped a little from the bulk of last season where he was fantastic
i just think wenger should be more ruthless, and put gibbs in for a couple of games. I think gibbs has done enough in the cup games to show hes isnt a liability. Puttin him in gives him a chance to show what he can do in the prem, gives him valuable experience, and more importantly shows clichy that he his position is under threat
It depends a bit on clichy’s personality as well. I dont think hes the type to just be complacent, think he just loses a bit of concentration/confidence at times. But i could easily imagine him reacting positively and the competition could take him up another level
