The truth is very few people like Eboue

EMMANUEL Eboue. Long time readers will know I don’t like him. I asked Goodplaya readers what they thought of him in the Goodplaya survey.

Firstly, I asked whether his behaviour was unacceptable. The verdict was resounding:

Agree strongly: 628—–64%
Tend to agree: 217—–22%
Neither agree or disagree: 73—–7%
Tend to disagree: 57—–6%
Disagree strongly: 10—–1%

I asked exactly the same question in November 2007 and the verdict then proves that what happened against Wigan was hardly the ignorant reaction of spectators unable to realise he was unfit and out of position, as parts of the press claimed. In the original survey the splits were 47, 34, 10, 6, 2.

Over 80% of you were inclined to agree that the heavy stick I give him is merited:

Agree strongly: 520—–53%
Tend to agree: 295—–30%
Neither agree or disagree: 69—–7%
Tend to disagree: 75—–8%
Disagree strongly: 26—–3%

And finally, I asked for opinions on the booing against Wigan:

He should not have been booed and did not deserve it: 102—–10%
He should not have been booed but had only himself to blame: 524—–53%
I didn’t boo but I can understand why people did: 281—–29%
I booed and regret it: 5—–1%
I booed and am glad I did: 73—–7%

That’s yer lot on Eboue. Coming next, a bit the board might well want to look at: how many season tickets will be given up this year.

  1. There is one person who matters who think Eboue is important to the team and that is the manager. We can scream and moan as much as we want, but when the manager says he will become an outstanding player and he is one of the players that drives us forward, you are guaranteed that Eboue will be picked week after week by Arsene, so the moans and groans will continue

  2. A bit of a pointless and negative blog. Very disappointed at the scapegoating of any player.

How many people will be giving up on your blog this year?

  3. RE: Eboue - I think this is a really interesting comment from Jay Simpson when asked about his team-mates in this newspaper interview:

    (FROM: http://www.expressandstar.com/2009/03/03/albion-v-arsenal-the-simpson-lowdown/ )

["Emmanuel Eboue - He is the funniest man in the whole team. He is loud, outgoing, really sociable and he will talk to anyone. He helps the young lads settle in when they step up to the first team and he makes them feel comfortable."]

Evidently he is a good dressing room influence - indeed I believe it is his passion and desire to play well for Arsenal that is his undoing (as well as a certain amount of petulance)

  4. herdee string

no shit sherlock. is your next piece going to be ‘the truth is the pope is catholic’?

  5. well said werewerf. On saturday he came on and was the best player on the pitch, driving the team forwards like no else seems capable of doinbg at the moment. He seems to be the only one who can take the ball with pace and beat a few players. granted he often lacks the final ball but at least it pushes the opposition back and increases the tempo of our game. He was also superb last week against roma

  6. Am only reporting the results of my survey… or maybe I should censor myself. Or not.

  7. I agree with Werewerf. His petulance drives me mad, but
I honestly think he loves Arsenal. Not sure how many other
    players at the club do.

  8. As jimbo says, he could be a very good player for Arsenal. But only if his attitude gets better, he cuts out the cheating and diving and stops with the silly bookings and sending offs.

  9. The truth is Eboue has had more good performances than bad this season and there aren’t too many that can say that.

On the diving front, why didn’t Vela get criticised by everyone when he was booked for diving against Cardiff?

  10. The problem for me is that while he is an effective attacking fullback he is not an effective midfielder. Both sagna and clichy are not expected to deliver assists or goals however if they played on the wing they would be expected to. Eboue has no end product his shooting is wayward and his final ball unpredictable. I can see he works hard but for a manager who insists on technical players why can he not see that we need someone out there on the wing who can either score or assist.

  11. Why all the negatives vibes from thes so called fans blogs - no wonder we dont seem to get any goals in the net - all these negativity about single players - we should boycott these stupid blogs!

  12. Is this an attempt at forcing eboe out of the club or what? and is it wise from as arsenal fan-site?
It’s true Eboue has acted childishly at times but one thing for sure is he is a good player, a very good player. This is the player who made the right back position his own as the club went all the way to the champions league cup final only 2 seasons ago. The same player who made the mercurial Robhino look so ordinary in the bernabeu the same year. and made storming runs along the touch line to deliver inch perfect crosses to our strikers many times that year.

Yes eboue played terribly against wigan as you point out. but eboue has thereafter shown much more commitment than most of our players. as pointed out above he at present is one player who gives us penetration others are failing to give. so why have such a go at him?

eboue is behaving much like rooney, ronaldo and others before their guided maturity -childish. all he needs is a more caring manager, understanding fans and a bit of time. do not forget if sagna were to get injured eboue is our most natural replacement at right back and if the boss were to assure him the place is his to take if he improves his behavior then i dont see any reason why he wouldn’t fight his socks off to win it just the way he took it from lauren.

remember also, remember ANELKA’s claim that he felt unappreciated by arsenal fans who thought he was no ian wright equivalent.

  13. Eboue clearly isn’t a great player, nor - at the age of 25 - will he become one. He has his good moments like in the last two games, but without ever creating or scoring goals.
The question is, if Wenger only wants world class players, what is he doing persisting with Eboue, who clearly never will become that.
I know Wenger rates Eboue’s performances in training extremely highly, but surely he must deliver on the pitch to warrant such a regular place.
Every time Eboue’s name is mentioned over the tannoy the crowd’s hearts sink. We know he’ll create nothing, and may further embarrass himself with his antics. He’s not a bad player, and would probably do well at Bolton or Wigan, but when Wenger tells us he only wants ’super super’ players what does he expect except groans when we see that 27 shirt.

  14. you a good fan booing arsenal player all the blogs that do this are sh*t
he does more then you ever do he trys rather than typing up stupid blogs

  15. If anyone would like to give me the opportunity to play down the right for Arsenal, I’ll gladly do it. They could pay me less too.

  16. Eboue did really well during the last 2 games. He brought the missing sparkle during the game against Fulham, unfortunately it was too late. Hope to see him on the pitch during the next coming games. Peace.

  17. Goodplaya, I think you might get booed
Also, time to get over Eboue, it ruined this blog ages ago.

  18. This is the real problem;

“It’s a fine line [between winning games 1-0 and drawing]. I have watched Man United get an opening here and there and they are a great side. But I don’t feel they dominate the games like we do.” Arsene Wenger (as reported on Arseblog).

Forget Eboue. We have got an untouchable manager on planet la la.

  19. young_gunnerz

Eboue doesnt deserve the treatment. He gives the team a much needed drive. The team plays a more attacking style of play when he comes on. Also he will always be used in big matches since he was once used in the RB role. As added guard against tricky wingers to protect the flanks. Remember the guy’s natural role is RB not RM!!!! So he will always hesitate infront of goal. ONLY IDIOTS WOULD BOO SOME1 PLAYING OUT OF POSITION!!!!!! I THINK HE HAS PROGRESSED WELL IN HIS NEW ROLE AND NEEDS TO BE TIDY WITH POSSESSION AND MORE COMPOSED

  20. young_gunnerz

    FUCKING IDIOTS

  21. you will be barn from the emirate stadium you fargot, so you think you are the good one booing other people. keep your money to yourselve no one needs your money at the emirate

  22. If there is one thing that I have learned this season, it is that fans are absolute morons and all of their ‘analysis’ is an absolute waste of time. Arsenal fans have become increasingly unlikeable, and if the failure to qualify for the Champions league means that all of the ’supporters’ that we have gained since 97-98 f#ck off, then it will have been a good season for me.

  23. Eboue is a cunt and I hope he is sold in the summer. All you fans who support Eboue are even bigger cunts. Noone of you care about about the history of the club, pride in the club, the club’s principles and standards. This cunt Eboue has been cheating for 3 fucking years and is a complete liability. Wenger is an idiot to keep believing in such a complete mong, and Wenger can shove off as well if he thinks this is how an ARSENAL player should behave on a football pitch!

Anyway, the poll tells its own story - so all you Eboue loving cunts are in the minority - thank god.

  24. Goodplaya: Your Blog is truly one of the high quality Football Blogs on the Web. What I enjoy, apart from the excellent articles, is the football banter. Your Blog stays focused exclusively on football!

With respect to Eboue, there is no doubt that he has qualities that make him easy to have around the team. In addition, Eboue often plays with a great deal of commitment and drive. His commitment, however, is delicate in the extreme. Eboue’s commitment can be easily deflected by a well timed kick to his ankle or some other ‘professional manouver’. Oh, the injustice of it all! He is then lost to the game. Even at his best, Eboue mostly does not have the finishing touch. He has pace and drive and it is this that catches the football imagination. I doubt that Eboue will ever flower into a player with a genuine touch.

  25. @ James - Nicely put, you are spot on.

@ Goodplaya - keep up the good work.

@ anyone who thinks Eboue is good enough for Arsenal FC - Fuck off and support some average team. Like spurs.

  26. No-one moaned or bitched or was aghast when he dove and won us a free kick in Paris, did they? If we’d won that game, we’d have won it in large part due to Eboue’s DIVING.

At the same time, RvP, Cesc, Nasri, Vela - fuck, even Toure, dive. No one cares. But because some sheep drilled into their heads that the reason we can’t score/defend/win is Eboue, they get on a high horse and complain about diving. If van Persie dives today and we win from that PK, no one will complain.

  27. The thing about Eboue is that he’s been like this ever since he’s joined us. The fact that he hasn’t changed is mind boggling. He’d be a perfect RB in a slower league like in Serie A, La Liga, or Bundesliga 1. One thing that Eboue is pretty good at is sending crosses, which Clichy and Sagna can’t do to save their life!

  28. What I really dislike most is scapegoating fostered by blogs like this.

  29. Goodplaya

You seem to have found your true audience in James and passmaster. And you are welcome to them.

  30. Eboue’s play acting, diving, getting involved when he shouldn’t and dissent has irritated me and most other fans but you can’t fault him for always giving 100% and trying his damned hardest despite his obvious lack of ability compared to other squad players. He is a superb crosser of the ball and I still have hope he can grow up, cut the silliness out of his game and become a decent player for arsenal. Wenger obviously shared that view otherwise he would have dropped\sold him long ago. I would use him as cover for Sagna or to shore up the midfield when we’re closing a game out or defending a lead. Booing him (or any arsenal player) despite how poor their performance may be is out of order in my view but pretty much sums up the new ‘fans’ who have latched onto the club in the past 10 years. You support your team through good and bad times.

  31. This rank obsession with Eboue continues. The ladies doth protest too much…

  32. Not sure how exactly Goodplaya reporting the results of his survey is scapegoating. The results simply sum up what his idiotic attitude had done to determine people’s attitude to him.

‘all he needs is a more caring manager’. Fucking nearly wet myself reading that. What else do you want Wenger he do ???? He’s spoilt him rotten & let him away with murder for 3 years ffs !

And anyway if you all love Eboue so much why didn’t you vote then ?

And finally…….anyone who thinks he’s a superb crosser of the ball has lost the plot completely. He’s an appalling crosser of the ball. One cracker a season when every other one goes into the stand does not make him a superb crosser. On that basis after Pires’ tackle on Vieira v Juve was he suddenly a superb tackler ???

  33. Im so tiered of this crapp!
Its important with width in the squad, offcourse Eboue will not be the first choice when rosicky and wallcot returnes. If wilshere or Ramsey was ready for the task wenger WOULD have used them. Keep in mind that he also was one of the best right backs in pl 2 seasons ago, therefore a great cover for sagna. STOP WRITING THIS BULLSHITT about players of the beloved Arsenal

  34. Werewerf mentioned the simpson quote, but also toure said last year that eboue was one of the most popular guys in the squad.

  35. What is the purpose of this “survey” or to be more accurate, persecution. This so called survey is totally pointless, totally ignorant and totally prejudiced. What a load of shit this crap is.

  36. “Firstly, I asked whether his behaviour was unacceptable. The verdict was resounding”

Of course people are going to agree with that his behaviour was unacceptable. That doesn’t mean they don’t like him, it’s not the same thing.

You seem to see want you want to see.

  37. I agree with Skuggi. The survey was filled with loaded questions, and I feel violated as a result of taking it. That said, who are the saints who “strongly disagreed” with the Eboue was unacceptable question? Do they fall over and cry when someone jostles them?

  38. Eboue is a player only a mother would love, period.

  39. I agree with you that not that many likes Eboue, but this method is highly unscientific.

  40. Ashburton Perry

I’m with goodplaya, james and pass master. I love Arsenal to death and the bottom line is that Eboue is a constant liability. Take the goal we conceded against West Brom, for example. I’m sure he’s a lovely fella off the pitch and I agree he’s currently the best back up to Sagna, but with Theo, Rosicky, Arsh and Nasri all fit (and hopefully some cover at CB/RB arriving in the summer) there’s no way he should be anywhere near our first team. I say we sell him to anyone who’s stupid enough to buy him - and I reserve the right to feel that way. If you disagree then you simply don’t fully respect and understand the values and tradition of our great club.

  41. While you’re flogging the Eboue horse a bit too hard, the survey was a great idea. An interesting exercise to be sure.

Fair play to those that said they booed and regretted it. Nice bit of honesty there.

Also, the notion that Eboue is the only player in the history of the club to cheat or play in an unscrupulous manner is laughable, to say nothing of some of our history - both recent and far older - off the pitch.

This reputation for being a classy club that we do have, and I think we do genuinely have it among neutrals, has been most strongly reinforced in the Wenger era, even though it has its beginnings scattered throughout our history. In Wenger’s time the good seems to have been consolidated and the less desirable qualities expunged (although the henry norris era is for all intents and purposes ancient history anyway). Certainly it will take a lot more than Eboue to damage this reputation (and let’s face it, other football fans think we’re full of nasty foreign cheats anyway, and did so before Eboue).

  42. Time to shut up, stand up and support Goodplaya.

  43. Eboue’s biggest problem is that he has become a ’scape goat. He could be the star player in a game and at best get grudging praise, an average game and he’s solely to blame.

Unfortunately, many of our fans think that by disagreeing with the team decisions it shows that they are somehow intelligent and that they see something that the club doesn’t. We now have a case where, like a certain section of teenagers who all wear the same to be different(?), a raft of fans who boo and berate a small targetted group of players (Eboue and Bendtner particularly) believing they know better than Wenger.

Imagine the sheer arrogance of that!

What they do not have is any perspective of the bigger picture.

  44. Eboue loves the club and always gives 100%. If that’s not good enough, it’s not his fault. When I heard people booing him individually after being taken off in a game where he’d been thrown on because of squad shortages despite not being ready to come back back from injury… well, it made me feel physically sick.

It’s well known that he’s very popular in the dressing room., which not only goes some way to explaining why Wenger was desperate to keep a place for him after the arrival of Sagna but also means that the fans booing him will affect the rest of the team.

Our job when we’re at the ground is to support. It’s not hard. Whatever people say on blogs and in the pub, you need to be supportive during matches. It’s like we have no home advantage and it came as no surprise that we broke this non-scoring run in an away match.

  45. Yep- the away fans were magnificent throughout last night. Such a range of chants you don’t hear at the Emirates.

This whole “survey” completely pointless and poorly timed.

  46. I agree Eboue has acted badly in the past. However recently he has played well and lets not forget he isstill essentially a right back playing out of position. Also to boo a ploayer based on his performance is shocking. If he stuck two fingers up at the fans or punched a teammate then fair enough, but because you think he played badly is just plain selfish. He doesn’t always light the place up but he never looks lazy or unconcerned about the game, do you honestly think he goes out there not caring about winning or playing well. Whilst I agree that paying £60+ for a ticket gives you the right to show your feelings I questions peoples motivations for booing. I will swear at Bendtner Eboue or anyone when they miss a sitter or misplace an easy pass, but I recognise its out of frustration as I want the team to win, and I know they can’t hear me down on the pitch. I ask what does booing achieve? Do you think the boss is going to pick/drop a player based on the fans reaction? I would sincerely hope not. Is the player going to think ‘ohh I thought I played well, but perhaps I was poor so I’ll do alot better next time’? A pro knows ih he’s played badly all it does is dent his confidence, and I don’t believe Eboue or anoyone has played badly because they don’t care or don’t put the effort in. Why do anything that doesn’t help the team, If my worst enemy was playing for Arsenal I would put my passion for the team ahead of personal feelings and cheer him every time in the hope it might spur him on bit. If Van Persie’s shot had gone in and not hit the post against fulham would you have still booed at the end? If not then were you booing because you thought the players didn’t try or because you were personally frustrated because you’re desperate for your team to succeed and they came up short. I agree you have a right do boo or scream or do whatever, but why would you want to. If we lose 5-0 we should be singing our hearts out at the end of the game to let the players know we’re still behind them and believe in them, rather then telling them we think they’re a pile of shit who don’t desreve to finsih 4th or win anything. We’re 2 games from an F.A. cup semi at wembley in a strong position in the champions league. The spuds spent millions upon millions look where they are. Sack wenger, do me a favour. Who would replace him, and if wenger goes so do half the players, no thanks.

  47. very disappointing!

can’t believe you’d write this rubbish
everyone has frustrations of various sorts throughout any season but we are all just voyeurs of a game and never know the real inside and out of the team and the players.

posts like this are a plague that spreads between shitty fans

  48. Its blogs like this that is pulling such a great club like arsenal down.

I am sick of so called fans slagging our own players off. If we put as much effort into supporting our club as we do slagging it off we would be the best supported club in the country.

Ebobe is a great player in his proper position (right back), it is not his fault he is being played out of position week in week out. The guy might be a diver and firestarter but he does put in 110% every time he plays. He runs his heart out and I feel sometimes his only negative point can be he tries too hard sometimes i.e. the yids game where he was fired up too much and got invoved too much.

Im sick of so called fans that jump on the gossip/media band waggon and slag our players off. I would put money on these so called fans being the same fans that call for Wengers head. F&*^ing maddness.

Get behimd your club and stop slagging it off. We are the best club in the world, start acting like you do really support the club. Thinking about it, I reckon the dick who wrote this blog is a secret Yid trying to cause shit.

  49. if questions are structured negatively, it’s easier for readers to ‘agree’ however it might be rather different result if questions are framed positiively as you’d have asked the readers to ‘disagree’ and affirm potentially negative views about Eboue

in any case, this sort of surveys serve little purpose, other than self serving ones

  50. The survey was fair. “Violated?” That is a bit precious isn’t it? “Oh officer, I was gang raped by an internet questionaire.”

Goodplaya has every right to enquire as to where his readership is coming from on a headline issue involving Arsenal this season. They overwhelmingly say, without coercion, that they think Emmanuel Eboue is bad for the club. That’s free speech. What do people want, a Soviet style dictatorship where people are frogmarched off to the gulags for daring to voice an opinion about a player’s attitude?

  51. Old git, goodplaya - you must be scum fans still gutted about losing the so called cup on Sunday. There is no way an Arsenal fan would write this sort of article or make the comment Old git did.

Ever heard of SUPPORTING your club? Too many shite arsenal fans at the moment. Booing the team off on the weekend was a disgrace and I was ashamed to be there. Someone in the toilet at hlaf time was even saying ‘we need Tony Adams back’ - muppet!

Good win last night, we can still salvage something from this so called ‘disastrous’ season. It would definitely help if the fans backed the team as oppoed to booed it.

Once again, goodplaya - nothing good about you mate, only shit.

  52. What pointless survey, what a pointless article, what a pointless blog..when u say u don’t like Eboue, have you ever met the person?..generate more hate and ridicule for a player..congratulations..I shan’t be reading you again..

  53. All right then, let’s just all write blogs pretending everything is just great and awarding all our players 10 out of 10 for every performance. Football blogs from the Saddam Hussein school of free expression.

  54. Iam stunned.

-Some people on here actually goes and blames blogs like theese for the downfall of Arsenal FC.

Get fukkin real guys. when u say some like that it just proves without a doubt that u live in the “refresh newsnow” world.

and BTW Eboue is a crappy player, i have about 20 mates i would choose ahead of him if he came to join us in the park later 2day for a quick game of footy.

  55. Why the vitriol towards Goodplaya? He’s just putting out the result of the survey. Do we live in a world where free speech is frowned upon? Everyone has to have the same opinion or they’re maligned? As for Eboue he is just an average player and his theatrics on the pitch makes him even more unlikeable. I would prefer to sell him.
