Around 90% of fans still behind Wenger
THE Goodplaya survey of 1,000 fans asked if Arsene Wenger was still the man to take us forward and whether he should go at the end of the season if we failed to win a trophy.
This is what the fans said:
Statement: Arsene is still the man to take us forward
Total votes, followed by %
Agree strongly 652 66%
Tend to agree 204 21%
Neither 80 8%
Tend to disagree 38 11%
Disagree strongly 11 1%
Statement: Arsene should go if we don’t win a trophy this season.
Total votes, followed by %
Agree strongly 18 2%
Tend to agree 33 3%
Neither 62 6%
Tend to disagree 136 14%

Next up, I’ll post the verdict on the midfield.

“Around 90% of GOODPLAYA fans still behind Wenger” would have been a better title, don’t fool us to believe it was a survey answered by 20,000.
4 March 2009 at 4:24 pm
Whats a goodplaya fan?

The first point is possibly the most pedantic ever posted on this blog. And there has been a bit of competition over the years.
It’s 1,000 people, which is the same number surveyed by professional opinion pollsters to get a picture of who 60 million people in the UK want to see in government. 1,000 is hardly an unrepresentative handful.
4 March 2009 at 4:42 pm
you can see how many people answered the survey in the graphics….just under a thousand, which is an excellent sample size.
4 March 2009 at 4:42 pm
Heartening stuff. It seems Arsenal fans haven’t lost their minds just yet.
4 March 2009 at 4:43 pm
Sounds like RObin had better skip back off to Le Grove…
4 March 2009 at 4:44 pm
uff, sorry for being so “pedantic”, I just saw a headline on one of the many news aggregators out there “Around 90% of fans still behind Wenger” and I thought it was really 90% of fans.
sowwy.
4 March 2009 at 4:56 pm
Fair enough, though to me it seemed obvious I had not interviewed every single Arsenal fan in the world…
4 March 2009 at 4:58 pm
Read this from Oliver Kay
“Anyway, that’s all for this week. Thanks very much for all your replies, as always. One final thought: if Brian Clough, after winning promotion in 1977, the league title in 1978 and European Cups in 1979 and 1980 (plus a couple of League Cups) with Nottingham Forest, had been subjected to this kind of impatience, he would not have survived the 1980s. In the late 1980s he had a very young team who played pretty-pretty football but could not compete with the might of Liverpool and seemed to be putting principles ahead of results (winning another couple of League Cups but never again threatening to win anything of consequence. That story ended with Clough a washed-up alcoholic who completely lost his grip and ended up taking Forest down in 1993, but that is not what I’m talking about here. The point is this: Clough remained loved, revered and respected for everything he did for Forest, even if he had become a liability by the very end. It is not easy to agree with Wenger’s methods all the time, but, unlike Clough by the early 1990s, he is a manager whose vision, talent and ambition remain undimmed. Stay patient with him and he will reward you in the long term. And even if he didn’t, even in the unfeasible event that he went into a Clough-type decline (minus the alcoholism, of course), he would deserve more respect than to have people calling for his head”
I have to agree with him
4 March 2009 at 4:58 pm
no problem .. maybe i better “back off” back to Le Grove …
… whatever that is.
4 March 2009 at 5:17 pm
That cant be right can it? I bet some tinter has completed that survey 900 times just to get the answer he wants
4 March 2009 at 5:21 pm
I think Robin had a point in so far as Goodplaya readers might not be the exact same thing as all Arsenal fans. Do people that take the time to log onto the internet to blog consider themselves to be ‘bigger’ fans? They may or may not be, I dont know, I am playing devils advocate.
Despite all that 90% is a very resounding result. Its a clear and surprising vote of confidence even during what is a very disappointing season.
My view is that fans tend to think problems we face are not caused by wenger. his lack of spending in the recent past could be put down to a lack of funds - which is down to moving stadium and bad property developments made by the board. whats more I think fans dont beleive any other manager could come into the club and do a better job on the same budget. that is the key.
4 March 2009 at 5:58 pm
I think you will find that 100% of REAL Arsenal fans are behind Arsene Wenger.
By real - i mean those of us who have a brain, and have actually supported the team longer than AW has been here, so remember where we were before he arrived.
4 March 2009 at 6:13 pm
Any survey should only be answered by true fans and hopefully it is the case with this one. Arsene has built the club so that is admired by everyone in the football world, it is run on a sound financial basis whilst drawing together some of footballs finest talents. Had we not suffered so many injuries to our key players the survey would not have even been thought of as we would be alongside or ahead of Manure. His only mistake was not buying a couple of experienced players for this season but we will never know how hard he tried to land anybody due to the way he conducts business at Arsenal, something again that is to be admired. The proof of the pudding will be the finish of this season and qualification for the CL, assuming we don’t win it, and with a couple of quality additions in the summer an all conquering side for next season.
4 March 2009 at 6:14 pm
Hey Matt?
You’re a fucking cockgoblin.
4 March 2009 at 6:23 pm
Matt,
I have a brain, i have supported Arsenal longer than AW has been here and i remember where we were before we arrived to boot. You show so much blind faith it’s un-real, its been said 1000’s of times before but here is ONE of the reasons why AW is being questioned by the “fake” supporters - In 2004 we had a team who could of went on to dominate England and maybe Europe, fast forward 5, yes 5 years and look where we are, struggling to hang on to Villa’s coat tail’s for 4th spot.
While im on the subject, only AW can come out at the start of a transfer window and state that he knows that we’re suspectable to high ball’s over the top and then do fuck all about it. His substitutions are 90% of the time diabolical - Either to late on in the game to have an effect or the wrong player yada yada.
He goes on and on and fucking on about not wanting to sign established players coz it might harm the more youthful players, so why doesn’t he play the likes of Merida, Wilshere and Ramsey, yet he insists on playing Eboue and Song. Its laughable sometimes if not all the time.
4 March 2009 at 6:25 pm
P.S
Matt, your not the tinter who filled in that survey a million times are you?
4 March 2009 at 6:59 pm
dont u get it??robin s a spud..
4 March 2009 at 7:26 pm
drat i didnt get to vote, Always been a strong supporter of arsene & am glad ppl are still keeping the faith!
4 March 2009 at 10:46 pm
Theres only one Arsene Wenger, one Aresne Wenger!
4 March 2009 at 10:46 pm
Another case of multiple personality disorder, although I agree with my namesake 120% on the spirit if not the wording.
I’m happy it turns out I didn’t have to fill the form 1000 times to agree with most of the results. I probably rate Almunia higher than most and have not totally lost hope on Eboue but that’s nitpicking really.
The most interesting part is to see how the negative people among us are so vocal and present on the boards whereas in reality they are a small minority.
5 March 2009 at 12:56 am
Yes, that is the most interesting thing and that’s why I carried out the survey.
5 March 2009 at 2:43 am
Agree strongly. IAIT (In Arsene I Trust!)
5 March 2009 at 5:19 am
Talk about le grove and gazzap comes to the fore.
5 March 2009 at 7:15 am
Ummm… I actually thought gazzap made the most sense out of anyone so far. But maybe that’s just me…
5 March 2009 at 9:36 am
i dodnt get to vote so add me to those backing wenger to continue
5 March 2009 at 9:43 am
tubes, some of the players have played below par and are now picking themselves up. its not pretty, but it happens.
if a team beats man u, its not rocket science to expect them to beat hull or stoke.
if they then go on and beat Chelsea and draw with pool, the tendency is to expect they can also beat fulham and Aston villa and man city… at worst draw… if we had drawn 3 or those games we lost or even won 1-0 in 2 of those 0-0 draws we would right now be knocking on the door of 2nd/3rd.
so let the season end before you qualify the teams achievements. As boro showed at Liverpool and villa at home to stoke and then at city, anything can happen in the beautiful game
5 March 2009 at 9:56 am
It would be kinda of interesting if Le grove did a similar survey. Most of the posts on LG seem to be fairly negative about most issues though. Apart from that good fun survey Goodplayer. As someone pointed out if this is representative it is good to see that most fans have not lost the plot about Wenger. IAIT!
5 March 2009 at 10:22 am
“My view is that fans tend to think problems we face are not caused by wenger. his lack of spending in the recent past could be put down to a lack of funds - which is down to moving stadium and bad property developments made by the board. whats more I think fans dont beleive any other manager could come into the club and do a better job on the same budget. that is the key.”
I said as much on the feedback section of the survey, the response needed some qualification which was that given the present situation at the club, i.e. a lack of funds for transfers Wenger is still the best man to have at the club. While we all might to be winning the title the amount of money we have to spend means we can’t, I personally cannot see any manager coming in on the same budget and doing a better job, when a better job means spending no money and winning the title.
There was an amazing stat on the Liverpool game coverage on Tuesday, I didn’t see the full table but Arsenal’s net spend since 2004 is £1.5M, the other traditional top 4 clubs were all in the £100m+ range, even Villa have spent massively to win nothing this year and get 3 points in front of us.
So at a club with no transfer budget Wenger is definitely the man we need.
5 March 2009 at 1:08 pm
Regarding the Goodplaya survey, 90% of the comments are certainly *not* pro-Wenger. The sample is representative of who reads the blog, not of who chooses to comment on it.
There are all sorts of reasons for this, just as elsewhere in life, most people who read a newspaper or listen to a radio show choose not to write letters or phone in.
As such, it is probably as true a picture as you could get of Arsenal fans surfing the net. Fair play to GP to setting it up.
5 March 2009 at 6:32 pm
I am surprised by the overwhelming nature of support for Arsene. I really thought there as a feeling out there that he was losing touch with reality and that his stubbornness was beginning to harm the team and damage the club. Fair enough, I was wrong about that.
But what I find hard to understand is why people are so negative about George Graham. OK, so he was effectively stealing money from the club. But the anti GG remarks are more about his footballing philosophy than his financial impropriety. People say his teams were negative and boring. Really? He also was starved of funds because of the rebuilding of the North Bank but instead of going 4 seasons without a cup, he managed to win the ECWC in his last full season at Arsenal and six trophies altogether in as about as many years, including two titles playing decent football. Seaman, Dixon, Winterburn, Bould, Adams, Limpar, Wright, Smith, Merson, Rocastle and Thomas were all GG signings or prodigies. And remember he brought Perry Groves to the club. What a legend…
5 March 2009 at 6:49 pm
Yes, I am a Wenger supporter. The style of football the team has played under Wenger’s toutelage knows no equal in Europe. It is attacking football, to which, many teams have adapted by putting everyone behind the ball. That is boring!
5 March 2009 at 10:57 pm
Yes, Two Owls, that is boring, but doesn’t it also rather suggest that all this enthusiastic support for Arsene is a bit naive? It’s not as if the excruciating, 10-man-defence stuff is new.
Arsenal have encountered negative, defensive football from teams since the beginning of the Emirates era and, nearly 3 seasons later, the manager has still largely failed to find a solution to counter it.
6 March 2009 at 2:36 am
Oh come on now Old Git, last season we largely found the key to unlock those defensive mid-table teams.
As for those who believe the main problem is in midfield, that was maybe true in the beginning of the season but in the last couple of months the real problem has been our attack. With Eduardo and Adebayor in shape, we would have bagged the last 4 draws easily and we’d be level with Liverpool and CSKA London.
7 March 2009 at 8:27 am
Old Git,
Do you agree that overall in the last 12 years, Wenger has taken the club forward? If no, then this post ends. If you think that Wenger has taken us forward, you will know that this is our first supposed dip in the last 12 years and for god’s sake we can still make 4th in the league and make something out of the FA cup and CL. This season has not yet proved to be a failur. Why cant we judge it in May? Till then, Wenger deserves our support.
7 March 2009 at 12:14 pm
We should judge in May. If Arsenal fail to make 4th in league, this is a very big disappointed season. Arsenal must in CL every season.
7 March 2009 at 4:50 pm
AJ,
“Do you agree that overall in the last 12 years, Wenger has taken the club forward?” Yes, undoubtedly. BUt has he taken the club as far as he can? For me, the jury is out.
Alex Ferguson brought Man United forward and is still doing so. Brian Clough brought Nottingham Forest forward and they are now in the Championship because he failed to address the club’s decline. Arsene is no Brian Clough. It pains me to say it but I am afraid to say he’s no Alex Ferguson either. Ferguson would have been ruthless with Eboue in the same way he was with Taibi and Djemba-Djemba.
7 March 2009 at 5:10 pm
‘If you think that Wenger has taken us forward, you will know that this is our first supposed dip in the last 12 years’
To be fair AJ, this is our third poor league season in four. The third season in Wenger’s reign that we haven’t had an in-your-face aggressive central midfielder & in those three seasons we’ve been significantly worse than in any of the others. So while it’s fine to acknowledge what Wenger has achieved in his 12 years (which is amaing) should we just ignore the fact that he let this season turn out like this even when it was obvious it would happen when he let Flamini/Diarra go & didn’t buy a similar player ? For me, if he fails to invest in a player like that this summer, I will have lost faith.

Hi - very good web site you have established. I enjoyed reading this posting. I did want to issue a comment to tell you that the design of this site is very aesthetically pleasing. I used to be a graphic designer, now I am a copy editor in chief for a marketing firm. I have always enjoyed playing with information processing systems and am attempting to learn code in my spare time (which there is never enough of lol).

Dem müßte ich dann allerdings vorwerfen, dass sein politischer wie wirtschaftlicher Horizont maximal Bierdeckelhöhe auf dem Wohnzimmertisch erreicht. Doch was bietet sich alternativ an? Die Parteien der ehemaligen Großen Koalition SPD und CDU/CSU haben ihre Glaubwürdigkeit längst aufgebraucht.
