Actual Arsenal news (of sorts): Wenger on flight to Sardinia

IT’S hardly your first port of call for Arsenal news, but yesterday’s spotted section in the Mirror’s 3am column included Arsene Wenger boarding a flight to Sardinia at Gatwick Airport.

Could mean absolutely anything and no doubt there will be people who manage to put every conceivable spin on it.

While I’m here, I’d like to point out that the transfer window does not close on June 1st. It closes on September 1st. That is three whole months for us to sign players.

So just because United have snapped up a few already, can everyone stop getting so absurdly stressed over a lack of signings. Thank you.

  1. Victoria Crescit Says:

He is probably going there to sell Thierry Henry to Sardinia Rovers.

  2. Malcolm Glazer Says:

no i heard he will be goign to their rivals sardinia utd

  3. James Says:

Doesn’t Pascal Cygan have a holiday home in Sardinia?

  4. mutuku Says:

aw needs to know that we need a winger who can play broadly and still score goals we also need a striker who is proven. mutuku from kenya

  5. Wibble Says:

Well I think it’s obvious. He’s had enough and he’s going to manage Sardinia Ontoasta taking Thierry, Cesc, and uncle Tom Cobbley with him.

  6. James Says:

And I’m not too sure why everyone’s fretting so much about the Utd. signings. No big deal if you ask me - I mean, how angry would you lot be if it was us wasting £17m on Hargreaves?

Wrote a piece about it here (apologies for the shameless self-publicising)

  7. soulle Says:

wenger style up man we need experienced players and the ealier the better for them to adopt to our team,

  8. Gilberto Says:

Makes sense to have his hols now, as nothing can really be done Reyes wise etc.. until the Spanish season finishes in 2 weeks or so.

  9. Malcolm Glazer Says:

i wish everyone would get over the none signings.

the transfer window has only opened today, apart from man poo no one has done anything of significance in the transfer market. Chelscum have signed an arsenal reject, and liverpool have tried to do an arsene by signing to underage players, and tottenham have spunked 10 mill on a championship player

  10. gazzap Says:

was he on his own with a briefcase or with his family and suitcases! probably off on his hols. in which case you can forget us signing anyone for a couple of weeks. or he could be talking to players at Cagliari (who play in Sardinia). I think their left back Francesco Pisano could interest Wenger but I dont think we particularly need a left back.

  11. James Says:

I hate to do this, but there are apparently whispers of a Ribery / Nasri double-deal…

    Can’t say I’m too impressed.

  12. Daniel Says:

James - Nasri Ribery double deal would be lovely - Nasri is class

  13. James Says:

Nasri’s had a good season, but I’m not much of a fan of Ribery - and he’d cost a packet.

  14. Bubba Says:

I may have said this before, but Hargreaves is the only of the 3 ManU signings that is capable of having an impact next season. Anderson is 19 and Nani is 20. Anderson still needs a work permit. And Nani will likely have the same troubles initiatially adjusting to England that Ronaldo did. These a signings for the future, not for today. And it should be noted that we have made a lot of signings for the future for a lot less money. Plus, Brazilians are really hit or miss in England anyways. With any luck, this Anderson kid will become just as effective as Kleberson, Branco, Emerson or Baptista.

So chill out people. ManU are not going to be a super team next season and hopefully with Hargreaves manning the midfield, they will be just as effective as England.

The added bonus in this situation is that ManU are now out of the transfer wars for the rest of the summer and the chequebook is now closed at Chelsea (they just signed two Bosmans). It looks like the only teams in England we will be competing with now are Liverpool and Sp*ds, who always seem to like chasing our transfers to scuttle them. Remember when they kept trying to bid up the price on Baptista on us two years ago. Actually we should thank them for that. It certainly saved us some dough.

  15. TonyS Says:

Word has it he is looking at Nautica Thorn, who’s on a free now.

  16. nightmook Says:

If anyone believes we haven’t been busy securing our playing staff for the coming season they need to take a reality check & think a little more broadly than their championship manager fuzzed minds are currently letting them. Our goalkeeping issue is now resolved in the short & long term & Hoyte, Eboue, Adebayor & Bendtner have also been secured on long deals. Add those extensions to the players tied down last Summer (Clichy, Fabs, Henry etc.) & the groundwork for our team for the next few years is sorted. Yes, we could add one or two but the rabid doom-mongering that so many of our supposed supporters seem to have developed a predilection for is, quite frankly, pathetic.

  17. arsene wenger Says:

i dont know what you are talking about i have never heard of sardinia rovers or utd i think they are made up teams

  18. Malcolm Glazer Says:

come on arsene, tell us the truth, i’ll promise to leave utd and buy arsenal if you dnt sell up

  19. Imtiaz Wookay Says:

I must say that initially i panicked when i saw ManYoo getting Nani and Anderson and Spurs getting Bale ….i mean if there is one thing Arsenal do well is buy the best young talent around and then we see everyone else but us doing so….but to be fair: Arsenal started our rebuilding earlier than Manyoo - we have youth in all positions and therefore only need two or three more players…Manyoo on the other hand needed replacements for Giggs and Scholes which they now have….we needed a keeper and Fabianski is gonna be a Fab keeper for us!

You never know though: Wenger full a rabbit out of the hat and bring Torres here in exchange for Reyes and Eto+cash for Henry (unlikely)….Eto and Torres up front would be a dream :) ….unlikely but still i feel that Wenger is gonna surprise us all this season ! :)

  20. My Arse Says:

i feel that Wenger is gonna surprise us all this season ! :)

Surprise us he will by still not signing anyone

  21. lc Says:

Yeh Bubba! I like your style. I think AW will come with sothing for us. He knows we did trust him for two years with the kids. I am sure he is desappointed himself with the final delevery of the kids.
His problem with transfer is that he always wants to get the best possible deal, which is quite stressing for us, fans who have to wait until midnight on the transfer deadline.

  22. DANIEL MS.O Says:

I wount mind if he buys or not. what us fans are doing is, we judging our lovely team on its past perfomance, we are not lookingat what the manager is doing to win trophies as from now. we are not the only pple who dont see that, we are not winning anything! he also sees that. Otherwise, if he will ask you personally to pick the right man to mix in the team and come with results, you cannot make. So stop arguing, keep cool. where is Eto/Torres, comming to play and how?

  23. gunners always Says:

Sardinia eh!!! Well, he was probably on holidays there and it’s a nice city. Football wise, i can’t think he would have gone there to “watch” anyone because of the internationals. David Suazo from Cagilari would do nicely though….but he is rather old….29….ish

  24. maxi Says:

probably he is there to make deal with Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Alberto Gilardino. Great strikers. i’d love to see them in emirates.

  25. David Says:

Sorry to burst the bubble but Sardinia is where Arsenes holiday base. It doesn’t really have to mean anything other than le Boss working on his tan.

I really do hate silly season!

  26. gybolar Says:

    Thank you for your defence.

  27. Viking Gooner Says:

Relax and calm down everyone,Henry is going nowhere,AW will bring in Ribery and alongside Fab, Diaby and Rosicky we will be a formidable force, add V Persie and T Henry upfront we will score at least 90 goals next season, and with Walcott,Adebayor,Hleb,Gilberto to mix with i can see us Champions next season, not so worried about back four, and dont forget how unlucky we were last season with injuries and the ball hitting the post instead of the net, will never happen next season,i promise u!!!
    Viking Gooner,Norway

  28. Danish Gooner Says:

Word has it Renato is coming……..

  29. mdubs Says:

nice to see a bit of sense as opposed to the drivel on g’n'r’blog. Chelsea last year signed two “world class” players, and like us, blew everything they were going for in a week. See this season they’ve gone the other way and only signing free transfers & a kid from Oldham. Could be worse though, AW could spunk £30m on a pair of teenagers, terrible if Arsenal do it, but apparently “enforcers the title winning squad” for ManYoo according to the doomers. Of course, every premiership team wanted to blow £17m on a non-scoring midfielder from the 4th best team in Germany too…

  30. mdubs Says:

I suppose everyone forgot we actually played Porto this season…twice in fact. Pretty much no-one said after playing them “fook me, that anderson looks amazing, we should break the bank to get him, and that Queresma too”. Yet ManYoo sign the lesser of the two and the doomers are out in force. I. Give. Up.

  31. Passenal Says:

mdubs - good to see some perspective! I was at the Porto game, which we won quite comfortably didn’t see anything to be afraid of. Some people are so busy looking at other teams they forget the quality we already have. Remember we secured 4th place without Henry, RVP, Gallas and Ljunberg for long stretches and we we only missed 3rd place on one goal difference. I would see that as something to build on, not a team in need of major reconstruction.

  32. Brian Talbot (ex Arsenal) Says:

I’ve always enjoyed this blog - keep up the good work folks. For my two pence, I think he will keep focusing on the kids to allow them chance to bloom.

The one area in which I think Arsene’s team is weak is defensively. Not so much because his team cannot defend, far from it - but because he picks players whom are offensively oriented.

To explain further - it’s all well and good having two wingers at full back, but who’s going to head the ball clear against a team of giants from a set play? Defenders must be able to defend first, play second - It’s joyful to watch an Arsene Wenger team play, but if the average height is under 5ft 10 across the back, without a a couple of dominant ball winners, you are always at risk of being undone away in the league games.

I also have concerns over the number of goals from midfield - for me, Hleb flatters to deceive, Ljungberg’s game has altered since Bergkamp left the fray and Arsenal are sorely missing Pires’ contribution from out wide.

People always ask for names, and my choices would be Sean Wright-Phillips for the midfield place and perhaps find a giant stopper - as Manchester United have found in Vidic.

  33. Tony Woodcock Says:

Is my perm still looking good ? Does it go with my outrageous german accent ?

Now that DD has departed, AW has been told to get an equivalent tan and as such will now be known as Orange Wenger!

Sardinia, nicely positioned between Italy and Spain ?? Arsene Knows!

  34. Passenal Says:

Didn’t Arsene go for Wright-Phillips but Chelsea offered shed loads of money for him to sit on the bench? He made his choice with encouragement from his father, so I think that ship has sailed.

As for the defence, I think Arsene might be looking to address that as he said something about needing to get the balance right for different games so we might see a less attack minded line up for some of those tough away games.

  35. TonyS Says:

My mate works in the IT department at the Emirates and he is “100% sure” Wenger has been looking at Nautica Thorn.

  36. Noone Says:

Get a defender. Toure and Eboue is leaving on January. And Adebayour too.

  37. Spanish Fry Says:

Brian Talbot (ex Arsenal) - “People always ask for names, and my choices would be Sean Wright-Phillips for the midfield place and perhaps find a giant stopper - as Manchester United have found in Vidic.”

I think, like Passenal said, that Sean Wright-Phillips has made his decision. I personally would be looking to sign Florent Malouda on the left. He is a consistent goalscoring winger who is a proven big game performer and would slot in nicely on the left.

I think defence is OK but I do agree that our wingbacks can be too attacking for their own good at times. It’s good to see a more defensive player like Hoyte being given a chance though.

  38. Tony Adams Says:

I suggest the boss gets a defender and striker on a season loan-because when Kolo, Emmanuel and Ade leave for the African cup in January, it will leave a big hole in our squad.

  39. pt Says:

Either arsene will buy a super-super class player an we’l allbe like sweeeet OR he’l jus grab some kid whose never played football, give a pair of henry’s old boot s an turn him into an absoluts superstar. eg kolo.

I mean utd paid like £30 million for rio, and we apid like £30 for kolo an he’s the man! Even clich, fabregas, eboue, denilson. We paid bout a tenner for the lot an they’re the shit, an they’re only like 12 aswell. Imagine how good they’l be when they’re 15!!!!!

  40. Bzzz.... « Arsenalysis Says:

[...] Bzzz…. Running out of good titles here as yet another day of season transfers ends. No big news on the transfer front after this week’s flurry of signings. In Arsenal news, it seems somebody saw Arsene on a flight to Sardinia, no doubt scouting the Next Big Thing ( or the Next Little Thing) to wear the Arsenal shirt and guide us to victory. Or maybe just a vacation. Arseblog maintains it’s the cheese. Here’s some info on Sardinia. Yes, you’re welcome. And here you thought you’d never learn anything by browsing soccer blogs. ( Man, I feel like the paparazzi with this post.) [...]

  41. Roger Lyons Says:

I dont know if Arsene flew to Sardinia or Somoa,
but he was alive and well at Stade de France in Paris commentating for FRANCE ONE TV on the Euro qualifier on Saturday evening against Ukraine. All the leading French Managers and agents were there, definitely more than in Sardinia……..

  43. gazzap Says:

the daily mail says he is holidaying there so it must be true! knowing wenger he is probably doing a lot of work on holiday and that includes flying to paris to commentate on the match.

wise words from Brian Talbot back there. A bit of coup there GP. I agree the defence is a bit of a worry. neither clichy or Eboue does much heading away. Djourou does though and I think he should be in the team more often. if we have to move Toure to RB then so be it. if we can cut out goals from set pieces we’d have a good record. going forward its clear we need a winger but I would not sell Hleb, just have him as back up for Malouda!
